Trip meter hasn't worked for a while and during the last out of town trip the main odometer stopped working.
Short of replacing the entire gauge cluster is there anything small I could try?

Remove the speedometer/odometer guage and check if the gears are jammed. Could just be dirt that needs to be cleaned out

But most likely the speedometer will need replacing.

Went though this too... replace whole speedo as a unit in your cluster.

I even matched the new ODO with my original.

Left is 96 speedo unit and right is 94

the 94 and older style go out often. hit me up if you need one.

apparently 97s do as well.

My trip has been out for months. Hopefully the ODO doesn't follow suit!

Next question, if I get a new cluster what can be done about the new mileage reading? Can it be adjusted to match the old?

I’m in the same boat. @customcruiser do you have a thread write up? Did you have to disassemble the entire dash or just the instrument cluster? Thanks.

Ok, I'm slow or busy at work but was going to do a write-up on my cluster swap compatibility.

I have a 94 and got 2 clusters to replace my jumping MPH and trip odo would only go to 4.5 then stop.
The two clusters were from a 92 and 96.

What I found was:

92 cluster will not work due to the speedo being mechanical. Some of the plugs plug in but not all and the dash lights are setup different... same issue as the 96 below.

96 cluster looked exactly like my 94. Plugs all line up but the dash light setup is different.
- all of the guages worked except RPM's
- Cruiser turned the brake light on
- A/T Oil Temp, Diff light and CEL would not turn off
- ECT would not light up
- Left Blinker would flash the CEL
- RIght Blinger would flash the Battery Low light
- Center Diff Lock would light the A/T P light

This should be the procedure...
To removed cluster you have to take apart the dash
You have to remove the clear face shield from Cluster
Removed whole speedo unit with ODO, Trip ODO and MPH face (like last pic below) via the 4 screws on the back
Speedo Needle has to be removed the 2 small black screws on each side of needle to get the ODO and Trip ODO unit out

** I would rather not post how to roll the ODO forward/back but it you PM me I let you know how to do this... or see 3rd pic for clue **

92 on Top, 94 middle and 96 bottom

I'm in the same boat. My trip quit a while back, now the speedometer is not working and a flashing "OD Off" light. I swapped my VSS with a buddy's 80 to test it and no change on mine with the speedo working fine on his. I have a complete meter out of a '97 to donate the speedo head.

Hey @customcruiser , I’ve returned to your excellent write up with another question. Not sure if you’ll know or not, but here goes. I have a ‘94. I’m doing a diesel swap soon and have acquired an A440 from a ‘92 locally. My speedo works fine, but odometer and trip meter are toast. Will the odometer and trio meter from a ‘92 work in the ‘93 cluster? The other thing I may change out is the gear selector lights, but not too worried if that part doesn’t work.

I think ‘92 is a cable drive. ‘93 and up are electronic. This might be a good question for the diesel swap section. I’m sure someone has run into this.

Yeah, I was thinking keep my 93 cluster. Just wondering if the odometer and trip meter will work from a 92, as my speedometer is ok.
