I used to have a 76 FJ55 that was a real chick magnet in a rusty pig sort of way, anyhow, it had a crank that fit thru the front apron into the main pulley and was awfully handy for finding TDC. What was this for originally? I see my 60 has the same hole but I don't see the crank anywhere. I BS'd a couple guys that I could crank start the truck but I really never knew what that crank was for.

I don't beleive the 60 series actually has the crank fitting on the pulley? Even if it did have the pulley crank fitting? the AC condensor blocks access. If I remember correctly, some 60 models that were shipped to Africa and other countries had this option.

Don't know about cruisers, by my old series rover had a hand crank fitting. It was actually the flywheel bolt which was designed so once the engine fired, the handcrank would slip off before the handle broke your arm (or leg - always kicked them) on the next rotaton. I used the heck out of it - nothing impresses people more than handcranking that sucker. Never had to worry about the battery, either.

If there is some way to get around the air conditioner being in the way, it would seem to pretty easy to change the US stock flywheel bolt for an import with the fitting. Seems like that would make some Lexus owners pretty jealous at the next rally!

hand crank

its was made for hand cranking the motor, but like whomever said, the ac condensor is in way, or radiator one...

I have a hole on my 82 FJ60 for hand cranking but the aftermarket radiator gets in the way. It might have worked with the stock radiator.

all Cruiser up thru at least 87 have the nut on the crank, fj60 regardless or OEM o aftermarket radiator have the rad in the way for a shot thru the front end to the crank nut.

its for hand starting of course. on a 40 there was a bracket that attached to the bumper to hold the end of the handle when turning, it looks just like the spare tire crank holder on the ass end of a 60

if you must have a hand crank, you can get em new for $20

I have a friend who, among many things, is a journalist for NPR. When he first saw my 60, he said he'd handcranked a 60 all over n.africa. He said the batteries were usually too old to reliably start the engine.

So, did 60's in other countries have a different rad? I assume he was talking about an HJ or BJ - did these have different rads?

Inquiring minds want to know...

I think it would take a bigger crank than that to turn over a diesel. Do diesels have stronger starters than gassers?

Bruce some stationary engines Ive handcranked had a compression switch to make it easier, not sure about toyota.

The 3F starter is 1kw and the 1HZ is 4kw.

I think someones considering a diesel conversion;)

Thanks for the responses...

Guess I wasn't BS'ing after all.... those Japanese think of everything!
Anyone on this board driving a 76 FJ55, two tone black and white epoxy with the back
windows blanked out with aluminium and a micro switch in the shifter for turning on the backup lights? Just wondering if the ol' pig is still running.

its all about compresion a dsl is like 20-1 a gasser is 7 or 8-1 . I tired ole 2f with low compression will be easier to start then a new motor.

you arn't gonna hand crank a dsl.......

I thought the handcrank was a crazy idea that wouldn't work very well. Then Greg Dyche cranked over my 71 55 at the NorCal Pig run. A bunch of us got to see it and I was very impressed.

the radiator in the us versions does indeed block access to the nut on the crank...for those that haven't hand cranked a cruiser engine...remember to keep your elbows bent at all costs. i learned that the best way...watching a friend (and old time cruiser head) mess up and lock his on the downstroke...pitched him to the ground in no time flat. i got pitched a bit when i got too close to locking, so i can imagine how bad it felt. i was sore for a couple days.

Isn't the harmonic balancer in the way too?
And thanks for the talk on "hand cranking"
