What do you have to have to mount one up to an NV4500?

see, that's one of the better features of an NV4500. the 5th gear extension housing is also the transfer case adapter. AA ( amongst others ) makes adapters for these transmissions. they basically replace the 5th gear extension housing with a new casting that has the proper spacing and bolt pattern for the cruiser cases; both early and split case are available.

I have case #438, built and assembled by Poser. I mated it up to a H41 4-speed, and I love it.

I have case #210. I've had my FJ40 for a few months now. Have not been been on the trail yet My case has the old school vacumn mode select. Have found out from both previous owners that they always had problems not being able to use 4-wheel drive. So Switching over to twin sticks from AA and Poser has sent me the mode select shaft,fork and cover.

In fact it was. I am very pleased with the combination so far. Nice and low. Is your H42 going behind a 2F or a transplant? Everything hooked up great and seems to function very nicely. I do have to make some adjustments to the 4WD shift selector linkage, as it is horribly close to the edge of the access cover (mine is a 1/'79) when in 4L mode, so I am afraid that a few bumps may cause it to pop out. But I think I can adjust out the issue. If not, I will have to entertain other options to remedy the geometry constraint. But most of the problem on mine is due to the SBC positioning the driveline centerline ever so slightly to the passenger side of the vehicle from its OEM position. It not much, maybe .50" -.75", just enough to present a slight issue.

I'm still running the 2f. Motor seems to run well so why change. The TC HOWWWlS something fierce and with my 3.7's it's too fast for my liking on the trails. Hoping this Orion will fix both issues.

My Orion is on an H41 and a 2F and I have 3.7 diffs too. I LOVE this combo; now 3rd gear low-range is about the same as 1st gear low-range was with the stock TC and tranny - I now have two lower gears than stock. In 1st gear I have a 73:1 crawl ratio (stock was only 26:1). It's the perfect gearing for Moab in my opinion. FWIW, my H41 and Orion make a little more gear noise than stock, but just barely enough to be noticeable. If you can afford it, I highly recommend the H41 also. Just for comparison, with the Orion and a stock H42 you would have a 53:1 crawl ratio, still twice the stock ratio.

i agree.
the H41-orion combo is a great setup for an fj40. we run 4.10 gears in greenfox's cruiser with that combo and it's right where it needs to be. that's on 36" iroks.

Forgot to say that I only have 33" BFG KM2's on mine. The rubber overdrive works really well with the H41 and 3.7 diffs on the highway too, I can cruise comfortably all day at 65 mph (70 if I wanted to ) and 1st gear is still good for getting moving.

Case #499 with the 4:1 ratio. Bolted up behind the Stock 6cyl and H42. Not able to shift the TC out of neutral. Not able to get in touch with the vendor who built it. I assume he must be on vacation. AA suggests I remove it from the vehicle, take the top cover off and remove the ball and spring. If I still can't shift it they say its time to tear it back apart. I hate to do that considering I just paid to have it put together. I've decided not to do anything until I hear from my mechanic. Good thing I don't need it.

Mine shifted really stiff at first, really had to put some pressure on the lever to move it, especially into or out of 4-Low. It's starting to break in now, but still takes some pressure to move.

I'm afraid to bust it. I put a crescent wrench on the pin but quit twisting when I got nervous. It's not possible to shift it with the stock shift linkage. Are you using the twin stick?

Nope, just the stock lever and shifter setup.

If it were Mudrak, yup he is on vacation. I know he has told me in the past he sets them up and they are hard to shift initialy. I have asked him specifcally on that issue as we used a case from him and had same feeling you do. Put cresent on there and tap with hammer, it'll shift. Are you spinning the output when trying to shift ? You may need to do that, sometimes just rocking the truck gets it. Also it is more of a sudden movement than high pressure to shift it the first few times.

Yeah it was Mudrak. I keep thinking I may have done something wrong. I have spun the output while attempting to turn it but no luck. I'll try more pressure.

Mine was built by Steve C. (Poser). I'm really happy with it; the best 4x4 improvement to my 40 hands down.

Slow Poke, it is easy to remove the cover and see, pull the PTO cover and have a look.
