So tonight I'm cruising home, come to a stop light, and when I go to take off, it's like the converter doesn't lock and I'm taking off in 3rd or something. Fine once I get going, but super-slow acceleration. Notice once I get going, my O/D off light is blinking. I try to shift from D to L and back, put in neutral then back, even shut the truck off and restart at a stop light to reboot ECU. Shut truck off, drive an hour later and it acts as though nothing is wrong. Accelerates fine.

What gives?

Hey MK

My 80 has a manual.... but I think your light is flashing you a trouble code that has to be read by a code reader. That should give you an idea why your tranny is confused. Could be stuck in second gear, or some other problem. G'luck!

Definitely a tranny problem. My stupid Ford truck does the same thing. "Limp mode." Start by pulling the codes.

Just pulled the codes, and code 62 popped up for "severed #1 solenoid or short circuit".

Now my truck has done this limp home a few times in the past, and it seems as though after shutting the truck off and leaving it for 5-10min, everything's fine when I start it back up. This morning was no different, the truck runs perfect. So whatever the failure is, it's intermittent.

Where might those be? Truck drove fine today with the exception of one stop sign just now. No O/D light flashing though...

They go out of the TCU under the drivers side dash, down to the harness in one of the various connectors by the starter, then into the transmission.

You can check for continuity between the TCU harness and the connector by the starter to see if the wiring has been damaged, beyond that you cant really check the wiring without some serious digging.

Then you can check the resistance between the solenoid (off the harness at the TCU) and ground. They're supposed to be something like 11-15 ohms. Mine were something along the lines of 40, 300, 20,000 and infinity.

Find the wiring diagram somewhere

But solenoid failures are an infrequent but well known problem on the A442f. I'm still betting they're starting to fail intermittently as they usually do at first. 150 for each new from American Toyota, 200 list. You can look for some used ones out of a lower mileage a442 as well.

That's a pretty good indication that the solenoids are faulty. Reason being that a failing solenoid won't necessarily trigger an ect ecu code. A code will only show if a short or severed connection is detected, it can't tell if there is a fault with the mechanical aspect of the solenoid such as a sticking valve.

Well guys , need help .. od light start blinking and before that Speedo meter needle start jumping and stop working and so did od light start blinking , conected the broken wire of Speedometer ,it working back again but od light is still blinking ,wash out selenoids clean the filter , but still blinking ,and the gear shift got ui

The FSM manual outlines the procedure for testing the solenoids with an ohm meter. Have you done this? What codes are you getting out of the TCU?

Aaarch35 my speedo jumps and sometimes doesn't work at all. What wire did you repair? Was it on the sensor?
