I have a spread sheet I can send you that has most of the bolts in this thread sorted by size. This will give you an idea of how many of each you have to have. Of course you should order more to have spares for all your 'friends'.

Most of the original bolts on my 71 are SEMs, personally I would prefer the SEMS over JIS with separate flat and lock washers.

Let us know how much your quote was.

Coolerman would you send me a copy also. I would like to get a quote from a local company. Thanks ALOT. Email if easier

PS your web site is awesome.

Hey guys, I answered my own question as to Why yellow zinc plated vs plain zinc. For those like myself who did not know it imparts greater corrosion resistance. http://www.allegiscorp.com/docs/materialFinishGuide.pdf Here is a link to some interesting bolt science. Apparently SS bolts can gall and seize. http://www.boltscience.com/pages/faq.htm I was hoping I could get a copy of the spreadsheet as well. Regards, Olazul

I'll need your email address to send you the latest copy. ;)

Coolerman and thecrazygreek, I just got off the phone with OEM. They said they have the M6 & M8 Hex Head SEMs in stock but not the M10. As for JIS the guy I talked to thinks they are clear zinc, not yellow. So the big question I have not is what to order. SEMs are the same as JIS they just come with the washer attached. So what do I order? I have not worked on the cuisers much and it was so long ago that I took it apart I can not remember what was typical. And most of my stuff was lost my a previous mech. that worked for me. :( I have emailed the above list from my earlier post for the sales guy to price, but can someone help me with exactly what should be ordered. If we need JIS as vs. the SEMs my local guy can get those as well and have them plated yellow zinc. Should be less than shipping from Canada and then they still have to be plated.

I would go for the SEMS in the m6 and m8 in yellow zinc. Its the 6 and 8mm stuff that you can actually see anyways. Most of the M10 stuff is hidden away from eyesight except maybe the rollbar and seat fasteners... then you just get your guy to yellow those instead of everything... my .02

From what I am being told by OEM, the SEMS they sell have either a flat washer or a split washer, not both. It would be a custom order. So we may just have to get all the parts individually and as you are working, install what ever piece you need at the time. If you look at the spread sheets, I think it would be difficult and costly to order SEMS and individual bolts given that you have to order in large quantities. SEMS are used to speed assembly line production. But for us who are doing restorations, speed is not an issue. As for the M10's they have JIS, but I may have to have them plated bc they only list silver zinc.

Small addition to the thread...

Alternator Case bolts

Alternator Case Bolts (Holds housing together)

3 5mm x 0.8 x 75mm Split washer only Not captured. 58mm shoulder. JIS#2 Phillips head

Alternator Front Housing Bearing Plate Retainer

3 5mm x 0.8 x 15mm Split washer only not captured. JIS#2 Phillips head

OEM said they would have my quote to me by a.m. They did say the minimum was 50 but on the larger bolts it may drop to 25. I will know more tomorrow. They also said they found JIS SEMS with both flat and lock washer in yellow zinc. Maybe we can combine an order on some items if min. is a problem.

Count me in as well. I'll need a couple hundred more...

coolerman- getting ready for phase 2(assembling everything on frame before tub), please email list to webelk6@yahoo.com. Thanks a bunch.

Coolerman, can you send me the spreadsheet? gregsolis@hotmail.com

You should post it on your website. Great work on doing all that!

Well bad news on the bolts, at least from OEM. I think they are confused and think they are actually made of gold based on the prices they quoted me. Crazy. See below. My bolt guy here in ATL quoted me almost the same list, but not SEMS, in silver zinc which he will have replated in yellow zinc and the price was just over $200.00. OEM's quote below is almost $2000.00? I figured SEMS would be a little more money, but not 10X:(

They must be in cahoots with the shipping guru's at SOR :frown: !

Would your buddy give an overall discount if multiple orders were placed with him? I can guarantee my order will be at least as large as yours.

Have y'all tried metric and multistandard?, I get most of my metric stuff hardware along with cutting tools, taps and dies from them and have found them to be very reasonable; they won't have the toyota stamp on their bolt heads but they will have the grade of the bolt stamped on bolts and nuts......also they are very knowledgeable and helpfull on the phone........something unusual to find :)

Lou

Pricing for hardware

metric full thread grade 10.9 YZ plated M8x1.25x35 mms=66.80$ for 200 including discount for over 100 units from metric and multistandard components!
$10.12 for 200 flat YZ plated m8 washers+ 8.72 for 200 YZ plated locking washers
totals=85.64
I believe equivalent to the M8 x 1.25 in 35mm 200 Double SEMS c/w lock and flat $0.81 EA $162.00 posted on # 175
These are not JIS but rather German DIN standards so one has to mix things if there is a clearance problem......they also carry oddball thread sizes:)

Lou

Lou, The standard metric stuff or what they call DIN is a little bit cheaper from my local guy, but only buy the cost of the replating bc he is really giving me some good pricing and the plating cost is a pass through cost. I only want to deal with JIS if possible since that is what was used originally and really looks nicer I think.

Coolerman, yes I can probably get better pricing for a larger order. Also, the minimum cost for the replating is way more than what I would be sending so the over all cost would go down. I will try to firm up some things this week and let anyone in on it before I order. My guy tells me 2 weeks, but we will have to wait for the JIS stuff to come in and then approx. 1 week to replate etc. How many people here are interested in some quantity orders? I would basically get everything in the list above, but the M10's were actually a qty. of 100 from my local so his pricing is really good.

Just ordered the "ruff list" coolerman sent me from nutsandbolts.com, which is alot.Paid $253+9bucks shipping. Not a bad price at all. Had em throw in one of those $49 kits as well , so for under $300, I think I will have plenty. Esp. since alot of my old bots/nuts are still mint.
