Nut & Bolt Frame-Off 1978 FJ40 Restoration

Had to replace the rear main seal and pilot bearing, and figured while I was there, I'd replace all gaskets while I was at it and visually inspect the internals, clean the oil pump, etc.

Heater restore. Blasted all parts, including the core, which really cleaned up nicely. I'm doing it in dark gray, as this is the color I've seen on unmolested 40s, not to mention my OE heater was this gray color on the back side where the PO failed to hit it with black paint. I know this is the correct color too, because there was an OE Toyota stamp on the side with a gray background.

All bolts and screws will be replaced with stainless steel. Hinge mechanisms are being blasted and then zinc coated. All rotten foam will be replaced as well.

Rusted vent spring was blasted, and then zinc coated.

The gray paint takes 24 hours to dry, so this side project will not be complete until tomorrow.

Well, this Mississippi sun and heat was enough to get the paint dry in just a few hours.

Reassembled heater:

it does....that is what i was saying....everytime you post a pic i go out and throw a rock at mine....

on another note, did you use a restoratioin kit? like the one SOR has? like for foam and etc....?

Thanks, Lou. Trust me, there's someone out there that'll make me feel the same way about mine.

No rebuild kit. Bought stainless hardware from Montgomery Ace in Fondren. Had some foam laying around too. Several of the original foam pieces (the ones surrounding the core) were in great shape. Cleaned them up, and glued them with RTV.

I can tell you from being raised by a early V8 Ford guy that stuff changed over a year multiple times. They basically made 3 completely different cars for each model in 1932 as it evolved over the year. Would not surprise me if there is a mid year change.

Carb Fan Restore

Blasted, painted, clear coat, and cad hardware. Even retained factory sticker.
