Trying to get back into my FJ55 build...

Origionaly planned to drop in my TBI 350/700r4/np241...
That's done... was going to build a hybred rear axle (mini truck shafts, and L.C. third) to center the rear axle for the Chevy case...

But then I fell into an NP203 and NP205, and visions of doublers danced through my head... And now I just saw some stuff about putting a 203 range box in front of a Lancruiser split case. If I did that, I woudn't have to center the rear axle...

I did some searching and didn't turn up much of anything on the 203/split case. Any thoughts/ info on this?

Additional info:
1) I already have all the pieces to build my centered rear axle
2) The rear axle currently sitting under the car has been converted to disc brake and I don't know how I would keep rear disc with minitruck axle ends...
3) The 205case I have will need some new shafts and such to be used in a doubler set-up...

opinions/info?

Been runnin 203/splitcase in my 55 for 5 years now, been real happy with it. No fear of breakin on 37's.

Nice pic! Have any info, or point me in some direction for 203/split case info?

I take that back! I must have searched other forums... a lot of stuff in here I have not read yet...

still, if someone wants to push me in the right direction...

The guy who does them does it for AA. You'll end up ordering it from him directly. It's somewhere around $500. I forgot his name. His name and number are here on 'Mud someplace.

203 hangs down low and it's heavy. those are the big drawbacks. It's pretty long in a 40 too, but not a lot longer than some auto adapters. In a 55 it gave me two identical length drive shafts.

I really like it a lot. I am jonesing for a Orion with 4:1. The nice part is I can use my adapter with the Orion because I'm using a 16 spline Toyota case. I don't think you can replace the 19 spline with an Orion. You can buy 4:1 gears for the split, but they are spendy. About the same as the Orion - about $1500

2:1 in the 203 and the split gives you 1:1/2:1/4:1

2:1 in the 203 and 4:1 in an Orion or in the split gives you 1:1/2:1/4:1/8:1 :grinpimp:

what's the source of the 4:1 gears for the split? I know Marks has 3:1. Tanks!

Have em make sure that the shaft has all the finish work done to it.My first adapter shaft was not finished.Just a heads up.

I haven't driven mine yet.But thats the way I went.I'm 350tbi/sm465/203/splitcase.

Front Range Off Road sells a disc brake conversion kit that uses Toyota front hubs, disks and supra calipers. It even makes it a full floater and allows use of lockouts if you want.

i was planning on using a 205/203 4.10's and sm465. but i realized it wasnt cost effecting and i would'nt ever use 4 to 1. all it was good for is to put it in gear point it up a hill and let it go and come back 10 minutes later to see how far it didnt go. just using my sm465, 205, 4.56's bolted to my chevy 360 on 37's will still give me decent highway speeds , plus the low of the 465 will great for crawling.
i would like to get a GV overdrive maybe.

What is the adapter kit exactly... adapter plate, and shaft for the split case-or the 203-or both?

And I was shooting for both driveshafts to be the same length so I could carry one spare... we'll see...

What might I expect to pay for a decent split case?

Yeah, my blazer has an SM465/np208 (2.6 to 1). I can't see ever needing lower gears for that truck, and I'm running 3.73 axle gears...
(probably never go bigger than 35s though)

My main reasoning behind the doubler for the FJ55 (besides just wanting one) is that I'm gonna run the auto trans (700R4)... don't see using it much for crawling up things, but I want to make sure I have the option of sticking it to a wall while making steep decents.

I have an SM465 and NP205 set up. That first gear is LOW! I centered the rear diff. (link to the build in my signature) That NP205 is bomb proof. I had my FJ62 case blow up on me driving down the street. I run 3.70 gears and cruise at 75mph on the highway at 2700rpms

I am also seriously considering the full float option from front range down the road too.

The one for the 16 spine case I have came with an adapter plate with a new output shaft for the 203. The output shaft goes all the way through the transfer case and carries a set of transfer case gears.

What is your deffinition of a low gear? 48:1 isn't a very low crawl ratio, if I was that highly geared I would be pissed, i'm not low enough at 67:1. For the average moderate wheeler on 33s it is fine but keep in mind what section this is. Double that and now you're talking.

Nothing wrong with a split case it is a stout unit my guess is that your case needed some Maintenance specially given when it gave out.

In short doublers kick ass, if you are going to wheel your truck, do it. I would have gone that route if I had the room.

I said the first gear is low. 48:1 is double than what I had at stock. I have plans to eventually go with 4.56 or 4.88 but then I need an over drive and I do not have that kind of money right now and my rig is also my DD, not a trailer queen. I know what section this is and people build their rigs to suit their driving.

No question it is stout. Your guess would be wrong. The case developed a unnoticed fracture and then just gave out. Just happens sometimes from stress. Especially if you wheel. A stock aluminum case is weaker than a NP205 cast iron case.

Are you saying maybe you shouldn't wheel if you don't have a doubler? That's just stupid! I agree doublers rule, but to wheel and even wheel hard you need to just want to have fun!

Oh... $$$$$700.00 ... getting less interesting.

And you have to supply a lot of the parts yourself...
Still pretty cool, but for that kind of money I would give up on the toyota axles and start thinking about narrowing a 14bolt or something.

I'm in the process of an SM465 + NP203 GRB + LC 3spd t-case. I should end up with ~124:1 low, which I expect to use very rarely; but it'll be nice to know the option is there ;).

It's costing me ~$1k for a professionally rebuilt SM465 w/ 3rd gear popout fix, ~$200 to overhaul my 3 spd t-case and put it into a 4spd housing w/t-case saver, $100 for the NP203 GRB + ~$500 for the adapter (tks Georg!)

I figure I'll need to flip my rear OME's to give me some additional room in the driveline (since I'm running it behind a '77 2F) and build a crossmember to support the assembly.

My most significant mod to-date, but I expect pretty big results from it, the doubler is giving me a HUGE range of gearing options.....

Wow. that's a spendy SM465. What is a "third gear pop-out fix"?
