That is $$$ I picked up my SM456 and NP205 with a bellhousing, clutchplate, flywheel and clutch for $350. I needed to rebuild the SM465, but I bought the parts for $126 and did it myself in a day. It's pretty easy. The hardest part was getting the top cover off and back on.

SM465 in some years sometimes had a 3rd gear pop out issue. the sincro would go bad and POP. Mine has been fine. It is a 1978.

Oh... $$$$$700.00 ... getting less interesting.

And you have to supply a lot of the parts yourself...
Still pretty cool, but for that kind of money I would give up on the toyota axles and start thinking about narrowing a 14bolt or something.

They say the have a budget version, but I am not sure how much that is. I have been looking at this option too, but it does seem a little steep.

I'm starting to like the sound of the NP203 getting piped into a split case... The discs for the rear of a mini truck look expensive, and I'm not gonna bust my ass to revert a truck back to drum, when it currently has rear disc.

So, back to how much should I expect to pay for a split case, and I've seen mention of several different spline counts... anything to look for? Certain year better than another, etc...

The split case is available in the 34 mm intermediate shaft or the 38 mm intermediate sheft. The gears are very comparable to the 205 in size and strength. The 205 is a cast iron case so it could have an advantage there, however the split case has a better low gear. Sidewinder cases will always incur more stress since the output torque to the rear wheels needs to be transfered through the idler gear. Maintainence is more of a priority than with straight through cases where no torque transfer occurs through 90 % of it's life (two wheel drive).. Even with this said I prefer a sidewinder case for two major reasons. .....1) Better rear driveline angle (the rear output flange is lower) very critical with lifts. 2) All obstacles on the trail can be guided down a single line, ...under the drivers but

88chevota, I'm about ready to rebuild my sm465, did you need any special tools(besides a press) and did you find any good repair/rebuild instructions. the worn tranny CAN pop out of Third gear,a fix is to replace the 3rd gear retaining clip with a spacer. This fits between the 2nd and 3rd gear,so there is NO movement with the gear. Bigmoose

I did not even have a press. I used a 4x4block of wood or a large socket and a hammer.

here is a link for a service manual

It seems every time I think of rebuilding a 420 or a 465 I find another one in someone backyard for a 100 bucks, sometimes 50 bucks.
I picked up 74 ex forest service truck with a bad motor for 500.00 at county auction. It had a 465 to a np205, front and rear dana 60s. I sold the chassis for 300 and the 205 for 75 bucks.
state and county auctions are a great place for government trucks. They usually had the heavy parts. Find the ones held in small towns. There's less
money floating around there

I found a split case... $450.00 ...

it came with a set of axles... everything out of the same fj60- 1986. Case looks like 19 spline input and 19 spline output...? Got a bucket of parts that belong inside it. I hope it goes together as easily as it came apart. Axles are missing drums and calipers(oh well - didn't need the drums... did need the calipers:mad:)... 3:70 gears...
Hope I can find the doubler kit for this case. I am sitting on a lot of parts for this project, and starting to get excited... just wish my Blazer would rebuild it's own damn engine and leave me alone...

then I could work on the cruiser.
