I thought I had this figured out but now I am not so sure. I believe that I have a np203/205 split transfer case but I am not so sure now.

The previous owner had the shifting pattern marked by the shifters but it was not correct. I thiink I have it right now but from what I have read, it doesn't make sense. So I am just confused.

To begin with, I have less gears than I thought I should. Only two shifters. The one on the driver side is 2wd - N - 4wd, the one on passenger side is low - N - high. That's it. Does that sound right?

My other question related to the t/c is this. Right now it has direct linkage for shifting. It seems to shift Ok but it jumps out of High gear when I let off the gas, pretty easily. Awhile back I bought a cable shifter for it. Do you think this could help that issue? Anyone else have this problem before.

Thanks.

Pictures would help figure out what transfer case you have. KNowing what engine and transmission, and what rig you have might help figure out the shifting problems.

X2 on what inkpot said, slide under the rig and get a picture of the transfercase.

Once we know more about the truck the more we could help you to figure it out.

Sounds like the 205 is twin sticked and the 203 does not have anything.

But yeah, pics would do a wonder of good.

It's also possible that the OP said "You either have a 203 or 205, I can't remember"

;)

Aren't both the 203 and 205 inline shift? I think they are both something like 4low - 2wd - n - 4hi. So one would be 4low - 2wd - n - 4hi and the other one would just be low - n - hi.

Yeah you're right on the shift pattern.

203 is a lever on the side of the case. (203's are also full time, unless yours has a 4wd conversion)

205 has 2 shafts that go into the tcase. VERY easy to make into a twin stick

Thanks for your replies everyone. I went out to take pictures this morning and as I had feared, it was very difficult to get pics with the skid plates. I have attached the ones I could get. I will gt more once I have a chance to dig into it a bit more.

From all the responses, I am very curious to find out what I have.

To answer a bit more about the vehicle, the engine is a 5.3L vortec mated to a TH350 transmission. Also running 2.5 ton rockwell axles. On top of it all sits a 1976 FJ55.

Here is what I have, don't think it will help much.

The first pic is what I could get, from the rear driver side of the t/c that is mated to the transmisison.

The second is the sam eside, just pulled back a bit to show the rear t/c

The third is a pic of the rear of the rear t/c

The fourth (next post) is all I could get of the shift linkage. Taken from the front looking back.

My hope is to get into from the top sometime this week.

Thanks again.

That is a 203/205 setup.

It looks like the lever that is furthest to the passenger side is for the 203 Should be low/n/hi (could be backwards depending on how the shifter is set up.

The other shifter should be 4low/n/2 hi/4hi

Thanks. So I am having some shifting issues because mine does not have that right now.

At least it confirms that I do need to tear into it further.

I will post better pics and further questions as I proceed.

That adapter (203/205) is pretty short compared to most I have seen. Check to see if you are limiting the linkage movement of the 205

Looks like a northwest fab adapter . Need pics of the other side to help with the shift lever questions. Top view (if u can remove a transmission cover) would be even better.

Thanks guys. I was hoping to have better pics last night but I only got the seats out before I had to stop. I hope to get the cover out tonight and snap some pics.

As always, too many projects going on and I just got back to this one today. I was able to get the transmission cover off and get some good pics of the transfer cases.

So currently, as you can see, I have a twin stick. I do have a triple stick cable shifter kit from Nowthwest Fab that I would like to install but I am sure I am going to have a bunch of questions about it as I have never done anything like this before. Which means a lot of research is in my future.

So is this a 203/205? Any comments about the setup? It looks like he combined two of the shafts into one shifter which could make sense I guess. My question is, how in the world do you get a cable shifter to the one shaft when it right behind the splitter? Maybe that will be answered once I dive into it.

Comments?

Advice?

Triple stick may be hard with that adapter.

]You're going to have to see what comes in the kit. No point in speculating without knowing if nwf figured any of what you have into the kit. If its a nwf adapter and a nwf kit one would think...

Right now the right stick does the 203 grb, should be 2:1.

The left stick does 2wd-4wd-4wdLow which would also be 2:1
The plunger on the outside is 2/4
The plunger on the inside is high low

Try going forward of 2wd with that stick. It's either that or back from 4wd

Just a matter of fussing with it now that you can see it.

Thanks Gumby.

I don't have anytime tonight but I will play around with it tomorrow a bit if I can.

I think the one on the right (towards passenger) is working OK. The last time I checked it, it seemed to be going from hi and low. Right?

The one on the driver side is the one that was giving me troubles. It seemed to be going only into 4wd and 2wd and then only barely. So from what you told me, I might be having issues with the the plnger behind the transmission. I bet it is not going in and out like it should.

I tried a bit today to shift it and I couldn't even get it to move, but of course I didn't have a seat in there and it was tough to get leverage.

Thanks again and I will be back! :p
