Based on this thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/206974-fj80-tres-sua60s.html I don't think it's needed for a simple upgrade of the TRE's. Churning in the back of my mind is what to do about the drag link. I've no intention of SOA or more than the ~3" of lift that I have now. The reamer would allow adjustment of new hole such that the 80 series ends would work. Be interesting to see how a 60 series end fits in an 80 series hole.

Curious. Got any pics with a clean 60 series in it? The 80 part certainly looks to have a bigger OD taper in that pic, but it's hard to say by how much. The thread that I linked talked of the 80's dropping too far into a 60 hole and even showed a tapered spacer. Maybe I misread what was going on there?

I bought Marlin's tie rod for my '84 mini and it is supposed to have 80's in it. I'm about to need a drag link for that truck & figured to buy the same again. The supplied TRE's fit the mini's tapered holes like they were supposed to be there, I had assumed that the tapered holes between the mini & the 60 steering arms would be the same.

How exactly does the taper reamer work?

The difference between a Dana 60 and an FJ80 series tie rod is very small. There are a few degrees of taper difference.

The diameter difference between a FJ60 series and an FJ 80 series can be seen in the pics, dirty or not.

What I understood was that while the taper is the same between the 60 & 80 parts, that there is a diameter difference. Oddly it seemed that this was in favor of the 60 parts.

The reamer converts a drilled hole into the tapered hole used by TRE's. How far you drive in while it's turning (slowly!!) determines how big the big end of the taper is.

I ordered the reamer today. Figured that sooner or later I'd be needing to make that size/shape hole in something and that I'd better get one while A) they were available; B) I remembered where to get them. ;)
