I currently have warn lockers on my 77 FJ40 and I want to go back to stock because I have heard they are better quality. There is an 1985 FJ60 that is getting parted out that have stock lockers on it, and I want to know if I can pull the 60's lockers and install them on my 40. Thanks in advance.

I think you mean "locking hubs". Lockers commonly refer to traction aiding differentials that limit wheel slip.

You can use the later hubs if you also use the later birfield joints. The '76-78 birfs are too long.

Hi All:

"Bad Mojo," what "Pinhead" means is that you will need switch to the later, shorter Birfield CV joints that came with the FJ60 to work with the factory manual locking hubs.

So, you would need to tear-apart the front axle assembly to swap-in both the Birfield joints and the later model ("Aisen") locking hubs from the FJ60.

Alan

Would the mini truck birfs work?

Mini truck birfields are the same as FJ60 birfields. Locking hubs from solid axle mini trucks are the same too, as mentioned above.

Personally, I don't think the difference between Warn hubs and Toyota hubs is big enough to go to the trouble of swapping them.

Pinhead: Your right I meant locking hubs.

Josie'sLandCruiser: Thanks for mentioning the birfields, I didn't know I would need to pull them as well.

Would it make sense to Aisen over the Warns that are on the 40 right now, besides going back to original?

Not really, as Warn was a common dealer installed option. Both of my rigs had the Warn locking hubs installed at the dealership. If your hubs need rebuilding, there are kits to help with that (gaskets, etc.) I guess it comes down to personal preference, but IMHO there really is no reason to switch back. Hope that helps!

Most cruisers before about '79 came with from the factory with drive plates, so they never had locking hubs until the dealer installed Warns. Going back would mean drive plates.

For a stock application, I agree completely.

However, if you are going to run large tires and upgraded axle shafts, you cannot get any upgraded lock out components for the Warn, like you can the OEM units, and therefore, run the risk of stripping the splines on your upgraded outer axle shaft when the lockout/gear fails.

If I had not seen it happen more than a few times, I would not be saying a word...

There is also a size difference, Asin on the left Warn on the right. It may not make a difference for most but it may be important to some. For what I do tucking the hub inside the rim is an advantage. Sometimes smaller is better.

There is always going to be a weakest link in any drive train and my experience is that stock f'ing Birfields are weaker than Warn hubs.
YMMV

Okay I think I am going to keep my Warns in then. Doesn't seem like its really worth it over all for me.

Poser what do you mean by large tire? I'm not planning on anything larger than a 33".

He means if you have a blown 427 running 6" suspension lift with SOA, running 44" IROK tires, you're gonna want something stronger than the remaining Warn hubs.
