Hello everyone,

My current gearbox is starting to make a bit of noise from the input shaft at idle and the front seal on the transfer is weeping, otherwise shifts great in all gears, no other noises when driving and last time I dropped the oil there was zero metal. I can't really feel any movement on the front output flange that would cause the seal to fail. Has 465,000kms on it with mostly highway use.

One thing I would like to know is swapping the box for a H152. Would the stock FTE have enough power to cope with the higher ratio of 5th gear? I mainly would like to swap the gearbox to a H152 to drop the revs on highways, just not sure how it would cope up hills. I do not really tow much if at all.

Options are ranging from most to least expensive:
1. Replace with H152 rebuilt with correct input shaft and bell housing from current box
2. Rebuild current box completely
3. Replace input shaft and seals on current box

Just not sure what the best option would be. Obviously I would like to spend as little as possible but I also would like the thing to be reliable. Given the amount of ks on the box would it be best to rebuild the box? Would the cost of a rebuilt H152 converted be roughly the same price? Or would it be good to go for a while with just an input shaft and seals?

I am not sure costs in AU for the 152. Here stateside costs are competitive for buying a new one versus a rebuild. The transmission set up for vdj's are $2,550 US (+/-) plus cost of bearing, input, and seal. Those parts are normally inexpensive from the mid east. You may find use for the vdj bellhousing and input w bearing supplied on the 152. We don't have any use yet for V8 parts.

I do mainly highway driving (79 w 1hdt) and the 0.75 5th gear is FAR SUPERIOR to the 0.88 5th issued in the standard transmission.

FTE has zero issues pushing with H152. Go for it, you will NOT regret it.

Ok, i'll start putting away for a H152. Thanks!

How hard are they to rebuild? I know someone with a few broken ones. Not sure whats wrong with them but most of them come out of tuned VDJs so some abuse I guess.
I'd be keen to give it a go at rebuilding one myself to learn if it can be done easily without any specialised tools.
