Hello everyone,
My current gearbox is starting to make a bit of noise from the input shaft at idle and the front seal on the transfer is weeping, otherwise shifts great in all gears, no other noises when driving and last time I dropped the oil there was zero metal. I can't really feel any movement on the front output flange that would cause the seal to fail. Has 465,000kms on it with mostly highway use.
One thing I would like to know is swapping the box for a H152. Would the stock FTE have enough power to cope with the higher ratio of 5th gear? I mainly would like to swap the gearbox to a H152 to drop the revs on highways, just not sure how it would cope up hills. I do not really tow much if at all.
Options are ranging from most to least expensive:
1. Replace with H152 rebuilt with correct input shaft and bell housing from current box
2. Rebuild current box completely
3. Replace input shaft and seals on current box
Just not sure what the best option would be. Obviously I would like to spend as little as possible but I also would like the thing to be reliable. Given the amount of ks on the box would it be best to rebuild the box? Would the cost of a rebuilt H152 converted be roughly the same price? Or would it be good to go for a while with just an input shaft and seals?
