Recently I have a noise, almost like a low pitched groan, coming from the HVAC system. It generally happens at the start up of the vehicle, like it is trying to open or close a door/vent or something like that. I also notice it if the system has to automatically adjust the temperature. I also changed the temperature manually shortly after start and was able to reproduce it. After the vehicle has been running a short time I am unable to reproduce the sound and don't hear it if in the auto mode. Does anybody have a thought on what this could be? There is no clicking noise only the low pitched "groan" that I mentioned.

2008 with 130k. All service regularly done including major service requirements. I wish I could be a bit more specific but it sounds like it is coming from the middle under the dash. It’s hard though. At this point I can’t tell if it is higher or lower in the dash.

My 08 LX had that noise. Turned out to be a servo-motor in the driver side front vent (next to the screen). The dealer wanted several hundred to fix it - I can’t recall how much exactly. I decided to live with the sound.

That’s kind of where it sounds like on mine. I would be interested in figuring out how to get to it and seeing if I could replace it, but it could be like finding a needle in a haystack

Are you sure it isn’t coming from the CD slot? A few people have reported something of a groaning sound coming from the nav unit, usually in colder weather

No I’m sure it’s not coming from that. It comes on when there is movement of some door/vent in the dash. It actually sounds like it is coming from the drivers side middle vent, next to the screen.
I hear a "groan" (kind of like a tiny, low pitched weed-wacker noise) that is caused by the fan underneath the driver seat. It took me a while to figure out where it was coming form. It's only on startup.
It’s most likely coming from the recirc door behind the glove compartment. Look in there, open the cover and switch from recirc to outside air and watch/listen to the door close (ignition on). A lot of techs go in there and force that door open to replace the cabin filter which can break the arm or dislocate it at least.
IMPORTANT: Check your HVAC recirculate door and answer Poll
This is REALLY important, it affects how well your system defogs in winter and cools in summer, and if a small amount of damage is caught early it could save you MANY hundreds of dollars. My door hinge is busted, probably by somebody who forced it open, not understanding how to correctly access...
