I went to run our 4Runner to keep the motor lubed. We do this once or twice a year. It's been sitting for 2-1/2 years and hasn't moved under it's own power. Today we were going to air up the tires, so I went to pull it out of the garage and could not get the clutch to disengage. So with it running I can't get it into gear. The peddle went straight to the floor no pressure at all, I pumped it still nothing. Got out checked the fluid in the clutch master cylinder it was normal. The MC is newer I can't remember if the slave is new or what. Any thoughts on where to look?

Hogie!
Sounds like the clutch master is frozen. Same thing happened to me...

I'll try bleeding it to see if that fixes it if it doesn't. I'll look into the CMC. Thanks for the ideas

Clutch disc, flywheel and pressure plate all frozen together maybe?

I don't see any leakage.

That's because they're rotten in the inside. They won't build up any pressure to move the clutch.

I just replaced my mc because it wasn't cutting the clutch anymore. I replaced it and worked as new.

Yeah, if the cups in the master cylinder are shot, all the fluid will just leak around them when you push down on the pedal.

I've also had a slave fail catastrophically like that, no warning. If you pull off the little rubber boot around the pin, you may find it full of old dirty fluid.

Bled it and it work for a little bit. I noticed when I was adding brake fluid this black stuff floated up in the reservoir. I'm assuming it is from the Chinese seals that must not be brake fluid resistant. :) So we will install a new MC.

Yep, definitely sounds like new seals are in order. Typically it is water in the fluid that hastens the demise of the seals. That it has been sitting for 2.5 years - and how long before that since the last flush and fill - I'd say that the brake fluid is likely a mess by now.

The MC was newer can't remember how old no matter. The new one was $14.00 US, it's almost like buying Chevy parts. :)

What brand? I went through about three sets of "lifetime warranty" parts store MCs and slaves in less than two years before I wised up and went back to OEM.

Yup... I had to learn that same lesson with brake MC's.

I didn't know they were as cheap as the slave cylinders. If your MC is that bad, it's likely the slave cylinder is also in need of replacement. In my experience, slave cylinders go bad more often than the master. As a matter of fact, just replaced this part in my '92 4x4 pickup yesterday. It started making squeaky noises when depressing the clutch pedal, so parked it right away. A good thing, because one of the slave cylinder attaching bolts had completely backed out and was hanging on the cylinder, just waiting to be lost. At first I thought it was broken or stripped, but not the case.

I got it at Auto Zone I could be in for the same issue you guy's are talking about. If it happens again I'll go to OEM. Thanks
