Hi There,

I have a hybrid FZJ80 since living in Venezuela we had it until 2007. Mine has all the quirks of the OBD1 but the relays configuration are 1995-1997 US version.

Turns out it did the Turn-no start engine but didn't know to look for the CEL light until reading the forum later. Replaced the Fuel Pump as I thought it was the issue. The next day it failed again. So I replaced EFI and Opening Circuit Relays (same part number) and had 6 peaceful months until recently.

The failure begun only when it was too hot outside, if I made a short stop, it will start. If I left it for 10 minutes or so CEL won't light on and the truck won't start but the starter would turn.

Got the fusible links and replaced it and now it won't start ever again, of course no CEL and I have not been able to start it again for the last 3 days.

Any clues?

Thanks for the suggestion I think I'll hire someone knowledgeable on the matter as I think this goes far beyond my skills. At least the I did replace tha parts that I could.

I'll keep you posted!

I'd do a quick check on all of your grounds. If the ecu isn't grounded that could be an issue, so worth checking all the ground cables to the chassis, particularly the one from the chassis to the negative terminal on your battery. Good luck.

Dead battery? Grounds is where I would start too.

Even though you replaced the fusible links don't rule those out. With the trouble when hot you may have a secondary problem.

I’ve had a very similar problem and traced it to a bad splice in the harness very close to the alternator. If you have a multi meter and work from the battery out towards the ecu and find the voltage drops you should be able to sort this. On mine it would work for a bit every time I worked on the harness up near the battery as my moving it improved the contact in the splice temporarily, then after it heated up or ran for a bit the contact degraded and it would not start and no cel. Best of luck as it was very frustrating, but ultimately satisfying to sort out

After 6 months I found the culprit of the no CEL issue. I did manage to turn it on after the fusible link was replaced.

I live in Venezuela and the 80 series are very sought after vehicles by the thieves so I decided to install a tracking device that would allow me to cancel ignition or at least know the last position of it if the worst happened.

So after of couple months that the battery was drained a few times and one day the no CEL issue showed up decided to asked the company that installed the tracking device to send me a tow service on their own to check what's going on, previously I asked them if there was a possibility that their device was causing havoc and they totally denied it (of course) but well, I arrived there, they managed to turn on the FJ80 and asked them to check the device.

They found the battery was expired, was swollen and didn't get any charge so it kept draining my main battery but they kept saying it didn't cause havoc nor drained my battery. So I told them to take the device out because I will take my car to a knowledgeable technician to sort out the battery drain.

So far, I didn't take the car anywhere else, the no CEL hasn't happened again and the device is in a box somewhere in my house, so far the company doesn't take any responsibility for all the failures their device caused and ended service because I decided to decline any renewal unless they pay me back all the parts I had to replace trying to find the cause.

I have to bump my own thread after one year and couple of months of peace, now the dreaded no CEL came back, also noticed no ABS light when this happens, the engine cranks but won't start.

Hence I was looking for a fusible link spare, although I had it checked and everything seemed to be within spec, I replaced the battery cable terminals because they needed to be replaced.

This started to happen last week when I had to floor the throttle to pass someone on the way, made a stop 5 minutes later and it started happening again. First thing I noticed was the EFI relay was hot and replaced with a new spare when got home.

Today after teaching my photography class had the no CEL and no ABS light, already wiggled the fusible link, the terminals etc. and nothing happened. Then all of a sudden the lights showed up and I cranked the truck to go back home as soon as possible. I noticed the idle was a bit rough (I replaced the spark plugs last month along with the distributor O ring, cap, rotor and gasket last month) and didn't run as it should.

Now is seating in the garage and won't start in any way, also checked the fuses related to ignition and EFI and they're good.

Also would like to know if it's normal that even with the E1 and TE1 terminals in the diagnostics port linked and not getting any CEL flashing with codes.

One thing that can cause a NO CEL when first turning the key to RUN is a failure/bad conection on the ECU power supply wire. Mine corroded at the 3 pin connector ( even though it has only 1 wire ) mounted on intake runner #1 right behind the P S reservoir.

The truck is back from an specialist workshop, I won't say it's solved until the no CEL has disappeared for at least two months. The ECU is fine, the FL is top notch, the fuses and relays too, the problem was a big surprise and the work the guy did was something I couldn't have done my self at home.

I'll come back with pictures and explanation of what happened, but for sure, I'm still cursing the previous owner for not telling the truth.

I’m curious as to what it was, I’m having similar issues.

Well it ended up being a forgotten tracking device, I had one installed when I bought the truck and had it removed a year after since it gave the no CEL issue, at that time they removed another one hidden below the driver seat belt. I had no more issues until this time in September-October.

The guy I found is a great technician and he said he was sure another tracking device was hidden, and he was right, no more CEL issues, these are the pictures when he took it out and also found a lot of black tape used instead of soldering.

Perhaps an alarm or another device is causing a short somewhere in your case.
