No cargo storage drawers setup (photos)

As i get to know my new to me 2013 lx570, I have been contemplating my storage setup, including rear drawers. I want to see those people without a rear drawer system and how you pack and organize for your trips. Do you use pelican cases? Do you use attic storage (blue ridge overland type)? Do you have some molle setup in the rear windows (can't find anywhere)? I am planning a 3 week trip this summer with kids 6 +8, so efficient/organized storage is a must. Currently I have a 50qt deomtic fridge, overland solar portable solar panel, dometic plb40, The Chuck Box Camp Kitchen that packs my cook partner and cookware, although maybe their is a better way to pack this stuff.

How do you pack your rear storage without a drawer system.

I went to Lowes and got a couple clear plastic storage boxes and threw them in the back with my luggage:

I’m a big fan of FrontRunner Wolfpack’s. Stackable, strapable, and solid enough to stand or sit on. Very inexpensive too

Aluboxes are some of the only pieces of equipment that have stuck around for a long time in my kit. The frontrunner boxes are a good option as well.

As for the non-drawer storage platform, I was thinking of some of @divemedic's work when I mentioned the DIY baseplate in your other thread -- (see photos here). Important to note are the sleeves used to secure to mounting points rather than just clamping down the plywood. The recessed track is also a great detail.

We've used rubbermaid bins for years. Works well, cheap, configurable. Plus you can store them outside the vehicle overnight if needed without worrying about anything getting wet.

I’m a pelican fan myself. Coon proof, probably most bears proof too.

I have a variety of Rubbermaid’s and also some Wolfpack’s and then I mix and match depending on the goals of the trip. I also try to get as much bulky, light stuff as I can on the roof rack and try to keep the heavy stuff as center/middle as possible inside.

Also, a long time ago, my wife bought these large square packing cubes that are made of heavy canvas material. They are simple things about 14 inches cubed, but we each pack our clothes and personals in one and they are great when playing Tetris with cargo.

One thing I would advise is to be strategic. The right container can also serve as a seat or a table. This is one advantage portable storage has over built ins.

No handy photos of the truck packed, but as for storage containers I’ve been using these Plano Sportsman boxes I found at Menards.

Sturdy and cheap. Added some weather stripping in the channel around the lid and they seal pretty tight.

We have quite a few pelican cases which are awesome, but my vote for best bang for the buck definitely goes to Ziploc. They have four sizes that offer two different stacking and somewhat interlocking options depending on size. They also have foam gaskets and range from about $8 - $16 and are available in clear or black. I don’t recommend standing on them though

So mine doesn't look quite as organized as 619TOY, but that's the idea. We have chairs that take quite a bit of space and often a guitar as well.

I keep our (ice) cooler behind the passenger seat where it is easy to stow and access, so that frees up some cargo room in back.

Thanks for ideas. I am toying with the following. So i have a '13 lx570 (59k miles) and a '04 lx470 (249k miles) (with frontrunner rack). I have a 3k mile trip this summer and I am wondering if it is best to sell and/or trade the '04 and get a small off road trailer (schutt / ruger style) that can store everything, then keep the cargo in the '13 simple with wolf packs etc. Alternatively, do I keep the '04 for the trip and build it out more with some REEF/KISS drawers and perhaps a small cargo hitch carrier. I don't know if I should take the '04 or the '13 on the trip and/or whether a small trailer instead of the '04 makes more sense.

I went with these Ridgid tool boxes over the wolfpacks because they were more water-resistant, I liked the handles and latches, it comes in two sizes and they can be locked together. $30 or $40 each, sold at home depot.

I have been running two of them behind the 3rd-row seat and they seem pretty secure. I'm getting a Raingler cargo barrier net soon so I can fit more in the back with the 3rd-row folded up and worry a little less about tieing everything down and heavy projectiles.

In addition to these hard cases, I use a few duffle bags for recovery and emergency gear. I have also been considering some of these Rightline gear storage products: Gear Storage — Gamiviti

What are those straps/bars attached to the upper seatbelt anchors used for?

I put in aluminum straps while I had everything apart and removed the third row belts. The plan is to use them to support a hinged aluminum attic/shelf at some point. Right now they’re just a conversation starter
