Hi. I just clicked "pay" on PayPal for my ONSC membership, so I thought I'd introduce myself.

I just acquired a 1988 FJ62 (traded my 83 Scrambler for it a couple of days ago). I know nothing about TLCs, so I will be searching (and asking) for help. Apologies ahead of time.

Vehicle details
  • 1988 with stock drivetrain
  • 203K on the odometer
  • Automatic transmission
  • SOA (not sure if it has a suspension lift)
  • 37" tires (!)
A couple of questions off the bat...
  1. It seems to have a misfire when driving – stinks of raw gas and the engine shutters; any tips on where to start diagnosing?
  2. Looks like the rear main seal is leaking - how hard is this to replace in a land cruiser?
Looking forward to being part of this community.

Welcome

Welcome to the addiction!

Not sure on the misfire... The rear main seal on the 2F engine is well documented in the 40 and 60 forums here and involves dropping the transmission oil pan and rear most bearing cap.

Search will be your friend as you begin to navigate the various repairs.

Best of luck!

Welcome

Welcome and nice truck. That's the one that was for sale on NC4x4 recently right?

Welcome! I too have a 60 with an SOA and 37's. Mine is an 85 and black though, so slightly different. I'll defer the mechanical questions on the 2F since mine has a SBC

Glad you joined us! Hope to see you at the carolinarelicrun.com

I saw it too. Here in the classifieds:

FJ62 would be a 3FE from the factory, not a 2F.

Just looked and the RMS seems involved. I'm used to the two-piece setups. Maybe I'll try a new oil pan gasket first.

How do you like the SBC in there? Did you do the swap yourself? Asking because I'm considering a LS swap for speed (ha!) and reliability (nothing against toyota; just seems like an old/tired 3FE)

Yep. That's the one. I found some TLC FSMs online; hopefully that'll get me pointed in the right direction to address the misfire.

I didn’t do it myself. You’re welcome to drive it and compare. It’s obviously less power/cost than the LS but it’s good enough for funk.

I have no idea if it has gears, that obviously makes a huge difference

Yep. I thought about that this morning - this one as 4.88s which is great for turning 37s...just not for turning them fast.

You should def do the LS swap. I am doing a 4bt on my 62 because I was able to get my he 4bt from another member if not I would have def gone with an LS

Vortech LS based block (Comes in express vans, and a bunch other stuff. The weirdest of which is an Isuzu Ascender.) Change out the heads for the aluminum LS heads. And You have now saved yourself a boatload of money. I have a friend that wrote for Jalopnik. He did a write up on it before he was on board. They took it down but here’s an article that someone wrote on it https://www.lsxmag.com/news/jalopnik-reader-builds-500hp-ls-engine-for-free/

That LQ4 would have been just fine as it was (from the van) for a Cruiser swap. I have the LQ9 which is basically the "high output" version of the LQ4 with flat top pistons, which up the compression a bit, and better rods. I can say that after I only did a refresh on the stock 317 heads, and run it otherwise bone stock, it's PLENTY for my 40. I'm certain this would be a very similar case for a LQ4 into a 60. Since that article was written, finding a LQ4 or LQ9 at a decent price has become far more of a challenge. All the hotrodders covet the iron block 6L because you can slap a cam, heads and turbo and make high 3 figure HP or more.

Tell me more about the diesel swap. I'd actually be more interested in that than an LS swap, but my limited research suggests there aren't a lot of simple options (i.e., toyota diesels).
