Hey guys, especially George_TLC for this one, I just want to say thanks for the great site! Becuase of the great advice I got from this site, I had the confidence to rebuild my starter today. Took a few hours, and some swearing, but thanks to a helpful Toyota parts dealer locally and the awesome write up by George, I got it done. And the best part.... It worked!

Before this job, the only other things I've done was replacing four of the stock speakers, and adding an external thermometer. Kind of simple tasks and not really tough.

Oh yes, and a couple of obligatery pics of my truck (poser shot) and a clean rebuilt starter... and my assistant.

Thanks for a great site.

Next thing you know you will be doing the front axle rebuild.

The more you learn about your 80 the more you will appreciate the information you can find on this site. Kind of a vicious cycle but a good one. Welcome. :flipoff2:

Nice going. Next time you have it out just carry on, make a day of it, and do the fuel filter and the PHH while you're there. :D

OK, I spoke too soon.

I started it up yesterday, started fine, and left it at that. But today when I went to go for a drive, it idled very rough. Can this possible be connected to starter?

I am assuming that I knocked something loose, but I can't find anything that looks goofy.

Any more advice on this would be helpful, before I go under there and pull it out again. (not fun)

The starter and the idel should be unreleated. It could be a coincidance. At your next fill up, try a bottle of redline fuel system cleaner or BGK44 with a tank of premium ans see if by the end of that it hasn't improved.

By rough, how much oscillation on the tach is there?

How did you get Jabba the Hut to help you?

That is cold. Funny, but cold.

Bizzy, working on trucks is always better with a good assistant. (See Avatar) I would double check to make sure you didn't accidently break the connection to one of the many sensors in the area of the starter. Romers suggestion is the only other thing I can think of on the idle trouble. Did you see a CE light? If so get someone with an OBD 2 scanner/reader to pull the code for you. Sometimes small shops can be bribed with a little cash to take 5 minutes to give you the code and clear the CE light without having to leave it and pay labor etc...

Strange, it was running really rough (or as Ralphie, my assistant would say 'ruff') for about 5-10 minutes. I went for a drive, and it was fine, the idle is back to about 800-1k rpm. Huh, is it possible that the ignition system had to adjust, or their was air in the fuel line (I had it raised at an angle for about 4 hours)? Either way, it works great, and I got to take it to a little offroad park up here in Washington at Tahuya.

On a side note, being that this was the first time I really tested it, I am amazed. I felt like I was driving to the mall, and considering I still have on my running boards, and a pug for a co-driver, I got some funny looks. But made it past everything just fine, and the only other people I ran into were beefed up jeeps and motorcycles.

thanks again for the help.

The fuel system on the 80's being EFI is a high pressure and closed system. The angle of the truck has no effect on whether the engine gets fuel. It would run upside down untill it seized due to lack of lubrication or hydraulic due to oil filling a cylinder and destroying the internals. The only thing that can deprive the engine of fuel is a clogged or faulty fuel filter or a compromised fuel system (leak), and of course running out of gas. It was probably an electrical quirk. Those happen sometimes when the computer is recalibrating after having the battery unhooked. You did unhook the battery to remove the starter right?

Normal.

The ECU has to re-learn the fuel mapping after you disconnected the battery. It will smooth out after a few drive cycles.

Thanks, that's what I figured. "them fancy 'confuserz' are dosh garned crazy!"

I did unhook the battery:)

I followed George's instructions on the rebuild so tight , I actually printed them out and had them on my work bench the whole time. :grinpimp:
