I live in Avondale too, Avondale Blvd/Van Buren, if you want a lift to a meet or need me to bring some parts back from another member, let me know.

I'm on the East Side, but we can figure something out. This is a full set of stock leaves, you can pull single leaves and add them as needed. You're do look like lift packs though. If you can, ask the PO what lift is on the truck.

Regarding the speed issue, I'm thinking it's a gearing issue. Either TALL gears or you're stuck in low range.

yes....I would say stuck in low or not using 4th....that seems VERY odd for that year of 40

I cannot imagine being stuck at 50mph

Would have ruined the song.

I can't drive 50....

I think I looked at this rig...yeah check transfer case. It if is the one it had a webber carb and HEI iginition and aftermarket Tach/ Vacuum guage. Also had a lockrite in the back, so maybe you have super tall gears draining you of top end.

I'd be happy to look at it for you. PM me.

thats the one. Up in litchfield park.

It was a good price, may i ask why you didn't pick it up?
Maybe a stupid question (probably bc of the problems i'm having)

Hey guys,

thanks so much for the love. I am definately enjoying being part of a community that is very willing to help. Can't wait to pay it forward when I can.

AZrider and Leftarmtan (cool name):
I will definately hit you up next week. Right now i'm having new rear quarters welded in at a local body shop. Once that is complete i'll drop by so you can give me the good. I'm new to 4x4's. But i can turn a wrench.

regarding H2 and H4. Yes I double checked to make sure it at high. Sometimes you just gotta ask. Gotta love my glovebox diagram, or else that probably would have been my first question.

I live on Buckeye rd and Avondale blvd. So we're all pretty close.

thanks again. Let's hope it is the TC and i can find a quick fix for it.

FWIW I had a tough time getting above 50 or 60 when I had the old F motor in my 40. I wound up going through the whole ignition system and chasing down vacuum leaks and got the issue figured out.

Turns out that the timing was getting screwed up at higher RPMs due to the vacuum advance being hooked up backwards and several vacuum leaks in the system.

Not sure if that will help but might be worth checking out.

Phil

... Have you checked/confirmed that the tach is set for the correct number of cylinders?
...

Most all aftermarket tachs have an adjustment switch for 4/6/8 cylinders. Have you checked it? If set for the wrong number of cylinders, the tech will be showing the wrong RPM.

If it truely is running 4,000 rpm s the engine would be really loud,is it? I think your going to have to look in and see what gears your running. MIke

Define "really loud"? Any F motor FJ40 is going to be "really loud" at highway speeds compared to most any other vehicle, so most new FJ40 drivers aren't going to have much to compare to. Is it "really loud" or "kinda really loud" or "really, really loud"?:hillbilly::flipoff2:

I can hear mine in low range..:meh::hillbilly:
High, the wind velocity drowns everthing out.

IIRC, the only advantage of a H42 vs a 3 speed is an extra grear on the low end. 50 is cool, they are built to go over the mountain, not around it.;) (Rarely push mine past 60 BTW).

Ok guys,

spoke to PO today and he said that it had no problems going up to 65. I'm gonna take some of your suggestions and start from there. Im gonna start off by stopping by azrider and/or leftarm and see what we can diagnoze in a short amount of time.

Hey M.hanson, its kind of hard to hear how loud the engine really is bc of all the other noise around it. Headers, Holes in floorboard, the aerodynamics.

fj40frk, that could be something too. when i got it, it did not have a smog pump. so i'm assuming some vacuum hoses might have been misplaced.

1. check out tach settings
2. see if 4th works
3. verify tc if that works
4. Verify i'm on 2h and not 4h. LOL

I'll keep you posted. Azrider and Leftarmtan. I'll PM you sometime late next week.

actually, at higher revs, the loud gets complemented by a scream

not having a tach in the first place saves a lot of worry :hillbilly:

Wasn’t azrider in your lap that ‘one’ time? Maybe you need to take the new guy into your warm embrace and figure this one out. :p
