Great Site!! Well I just bought my first FJ40, what a blast! I was wondering about a whine cound coming from the engine though. It is RPM dependent and almost sounds like the old Pete Jackson timing gear drives. My FJ is an 80 with a rebuilt 2F. Do these engines have alot of timing gear noise? Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Stu :p

Are you sure it's not coming from the transfer case? Mine got a little quieter after a rebuild, but it still whines a bit. There's a seal between the transmission and transfer case that when it fails it pumps all the oil from the transfer case into the transmission. So there are lots of them out there (including mine) that have been run with hardly any oil in them. The new seal I installed on mine lasted about a year, now I'm back to running a transfer hose between the two fill plugs. Also your stock timing gears would have had a rubber elastomer in the cam gear to dampen noise. Some of the aftermarket timing gears are solid so if your motor was rebuilt with a solid cam gear it would be a bit louder than stock.

Sorry, I should have noted it is most noticable sitting still. It definatley seems to be coming from somewhere in the engine.

Thanks,

Stu

I would say that a 2F normally does not have a lot of timing gear noise.
A rebuilt 2F? rebuilt how long ago? by whom? I could see a 2F having a lot of timing gear noise if the little timing gear oil squirter wasn't installed correctly...

Good question. The guy I bought it from said the fella he bought it from had rebuilt it about 7K before, so now it should have about 10K on it. Not sure of time frame. I appreciate the tip on the oil squirter, I am going to eliminate all external doubts first and then take the timing cover off and look at the squirter. From the sound it is making that might be it. One of the cool things about this purchase was the guy had a big ol' stack of factory manuals that went with the rig so I was able to see exactly the part you mentioned.

I am no expert on the 2F or any F for that matter.
BUT,
At this stage you really need to pinpoint where that noise is coming from , then think of the reasons and fixes.
You can use a pice of small tube to listen with. That might help

Later 2Fs have a rubber dampened cam gear that tends to fail, so check for chunks of rubber next time you change your oil.

just put the clutch in for fun and see if it goes away .

OK Guys here is an update. I tried the clutch - no change, disconnected belts - no change, tried the old broom handle trick and it sounds like it is some where is the valve cover. Any more ideas?

Stu

Remove the valve cover and post up what you find.

If nothing appears obviously wrong, leave the cover off, start the engine and watch the valve train.
