Hola compadres!

Name: Joey
Location: AZ but moving to CA (LA area) in a few weeks.
Occupation: Jack of all trades, master of none. (Enginerding here)
Vehicle: 1999 LC with 173k on the clock

Goals:
1.) Climb Everest Naked
2.) Convince my FJ60 friend my hundy is wicked sweet
3.) Build the ultimate overland vehicle
4.) Learn as much as humanly possible about land cruisers

Growing up my parents had cruisers.... a white 1991, a white 2000 and now i have my silver 1999

I will be moving to CA in approximately a week and a half, until I move (along with packing and finding a place to live) I will be doing everything I possibly can to get this LC ready to rock. I would like to install an OME 2.5" lift... (torsion bars, slee diff drop, slee UCA's, rear springs, and whatever else you guys think I should install)

MY FIRST QUESTION:
I talked to Slee on the phone today and they said that OME rear shocks are currently out of stock and back ordered until march, are there any other options as far as rear shocks go? I would like to get this lift ordered ASAP so I will have time to get it installed. (I will be moving to an apt and will have minimal tools and minimal support in california)

Well . . . first of all, you should get your priorities in order (re: whatever else you guys think I should install).

Your first mod must of course be the very important change holder.

Next, you should make sure you've got cabin filters in your LC.

Then you might consider new floor and cargo mats.

It's the little things, ya know, that make all the difference.

Down the road, after a few miles, and some more accessorizing, you can consider an OME package.

maybe i should wait on the lift then.... my predicament is that I will be needing new tires very soon. I would like to only buy tires once.. instead of lifting in a few months and selling the tires i just purchased to buy 33"s. (whatever else you guys think i need) was geared exactly towards the mods you pointed out :) so thank you, anything else that I should consider doing?

33's should fit without a lift. Spend your money baselining the truck. Read the 100 series faq. A tone of good advice in there.

Congrats and Welcome! When you get to SoCal and are settled in, hit me up and we'll go wheeling some time.

Awesome i will definitely give you a shout.

So 33"s will clear huh? Any rubbing?

I was running 33's on my LX with 0 rubs. I am now running 35's.

Yes I rub a dub dub. Nothing major though.

No rubbing on mine or any other's reports I've read on here. 33's were the first mod my truck saw as I bought it with baldies. IMO, with the moving and whatnot coming up, get a nice set of 33's and drive safe out this way. If your goal for lifting is 33's (that's the mindset I started with) then just slap them on, adjust the tbars up a tad if you feel it's necessary (but leave the min 60mm droop, I adjusted up .5" leaving the rear about .5" rake) and align that front end. I promise you'll be happy. I still want a lift, but I'm going to hold off because I do everything I need to just fine like this. I'd say the necessity for lift in these trucks comes from either needing to clear larger than 33's, or to support the added weight of armor.

Yep, 285/75. Or even 295/75 if you can find em.

I have a 99 as well. Here it is with 285/75's before the OME 2.5 lift.

awesome! Thanks guys, Ill pick up some tires next week.

Quick question, what does baselining mean? Getting all the maintenance caught up?

Here is what I am planning on doing, please add to my list as you see fit....
-Timing belt
-Tensioner
-Thermostat with gasket and O-ring
-Waterpump with gasket and O-ring
-Front, Rear, Center diff fluids
-tranny fluid (only change, no flush)
-muffler bearings and blinker fluid ;)
-motor oil and filter
-flush coolant, replace with toyota red
-hoses as necessary
-air filter
- ......?

I found this thread for an 03 but i believe it will still apply?

Good list, and yes that is exactly what I meant.

I'd add the heater hose t's, TPS sensor, all of the idlers and the serpentine belt tensioner, fan bracket, spark plugs, starter contacts.

Hey Somebody,

Didn't look at your post count when I posted above. My bad - no offense intended.

Baselining is a great start. At 173k, your LC is near the 180k mark and as Cappy mentioned above, is close to the second 90k service schedule.

Plus, lots of info. in the 100 series FAQ to glean.

Bunch of nice overland (and other build ups) in the featured 100 series thread.

Plus, you're probably already familiar w/ Expedition Portal and the Toyota Land Cruiser thread over there for additional overlanding ideas.

Congrats and good luck w/ the mods and move.

Hey no worries. I appreciate the links.
I plan on doing the second 90k maintenance next week, just need to make sure I round up all the parts I need. Im looking to get my hands on a FSM, I am having a tough time getting an itemized list of all the parts i need, including gaskets and misc. items that may not be obvious.

Anybody know of a thread with part numbers for the 90k service (including gaskets and such)

Call Cruiser Dan or Onur. They both know what you need. (Pretty sure that Beno (screen name on Mud for Onur) posted a thread with part numbers.

285/75/r16's installed. Pictures soon.

Looks like i am going to need to get my computer reflashed to get a master key (i only have the valet key)

Any one ever had issues with the ignition switch(i am on my phone at work, only did a brief search)? This morning i had trouble getting the switch to turn to lock (completely off). I can pull the key out when its running, or in accessory, but couldn't get the switch to turn all the way to lock. With some caressing i got it to turn to lock finally...

^ Mine gets stuck sometimes too (in ACC), but a jiggle usually fixes it fast. I was also wondering if these ignitions can be rebuilt? Couldn't find anything on it either.

No luck... new ignition is about 160 bones from yota and it comes with 2 keys that are keyed to that ignition. 240 ish for new master key (i think this price covers the 1 hour of labor as well).... but then you need to get the master key cut i think. Now you have master key that is keyed different than the door locks... :crybaby:
