How is this rig coming along?

Well....................

Tom had a few life detours, then bad went to worse for the troopie. Broadsided at speed, the insurance company wrote it off as a total loss. The left side roo bar took a fair share of the shock load, tho in some respects it also ended up being a damage multiplier.

No frame damage, but both A and B pillar damage, with extensive damage to the rocker and the cowl.

The area around the kick vent in the cowl must have been a secondary point of impact, as it is caved in about 1.5", yet does not show the signs of scarring typical of primary impact. This force also carried across rearward, with the A pillar caving in about 3/8".

Tom brought it to me last week to see what I could do for the truck to return it to usefulness [he bought it back from the ins co pretty cheap;)]

In these cases, I usually start with making several cuts in the body to relieve the stress from the stretched metal. I told Tom I would try to remember to take some pics along the way. Here's one back at the B" pillar where the stress relief starts.

She's a beaut, Aussie25! I'll have to check with SWMBO on that paint scheme. I do know that she wants rid of the current baby blue!

Mark, thanks for the pics and the updated thread.

sorry to hear about the accident, glad it's isolated to that area and not worse.

Sure like the loof of a soft top troopy!

I'm not sure how similar the tubs are between Norforce and factory civilian, but Aqualu has a nearly rust-free tub from an '84 HJ47. I'm not sure what they are doing with it, but it would sure solve most of the issues on this one.

Do you know if Tom would want to put his rig on the Troopy Registry (see link in sig. line below)? There are no Norforce rigs on there and I'd sure love to see it there:clap:

Looking forward to seeing the progress on this rig.

Cheers,

Josh

Haha! Before he decided to send his, Matt and I spoke about having Aqualu use mine as a model because they apparently travel not infrequently to Southern California!

As far as I can tell (having only mine as a reference and not having seen any non-NorForce Troopies in person), there is little difference between the tubs. There is a bolt on part that extends the tub in the rear up about six inches, which was used to relocate the tail lights above the jerry cans which got mounted to the rear bumper. In mine there is no storage compartment in the rear wheel well, but there are storage compartments in the exterior portion of the tub immediately fore of the wheels.

Funny, I thought I had put it on the registry way back when I brought it over. I will dig up the VIN and add it to the list.

In CA when you buy back from the insurance company after they total it, do you end up with a "salvage title", or do you get to retain your original?

You get a salvage title. Once Mark is done with the work I will take it to the DMV, they will say "yes, it's driveable" and issue a salvage title. I was bummed at first when I dealt with it through the insurance company, but by writing it off completely I got a fair bit more $$ from them. And it cost me < $200 to buy it back!

The Tubs.

The tub on a Norforce is the same as a standard HJ47 apart from the bolt ons bits. If you have a nother one it is a easy fix. No numbers stamped on the tub.

After the second round of cutting, pulling and beating, the rocker:

the cowl [still needs one more cut:

and most importantly, the A pillar:

I think we are ready to test-fit a 'new' door.;)

Shortly after the last post, Tom took the rig back home, and work was put on hold again. Now the troopie is back with me for an extended stay[~3 years]and I will be slowly trying to finish sorting out the rough body work, t-case overhaul, cooling system etc. With any luck, it will end up with a rattle can OD green paint job and an OCD top.

To recap, this is where we left off:

The next step in the project was to remove the Norforce rear entry and move the mil-spec taillights back to the factory location. The custom rear entry:

…which is now removed and available for purchase.:grinpimp:

Having seen the rust holes in the cowl and rockers, I wasn't holding out much for the rear sill. It could have been worse:

So just to clarify, this rig will be returned to factory spec [not Norforce spec]?

Nice 47 tlaporte! Take care of that guy! My old man may have driven that exact truck..
