I know this is an age old set up question, but my fj40 build plan has changed. I have a new never installed toy box to sm465 and 3speed to set up and have decided to stay sprung under and go without a dual case .I'm looking for either a plate adapter for the sm465 and 3spd tc, or go with an nv4500 and adapter. Any thought welcome. Can I still get a plate adapter? Also I'll be selling or trading off the toy box.

Thanks for you time

You might want to check the classified section.

Many, many years ago, I did the SM465 plate adapter. If memory service, it was Classic Cruisers who usually made it. They also provided a drilled/tapped main shaft. Please double/triple check manufacturer.

The tapped shaft was also drilled for safety wire which was VERY nice feature.

Sadly, the plate itself was poorly machined. At least one hole was off enough to not be usable.

I currently run an NV4500 with advance adapters style. Very nice fit.
I'm still learning how to navigate The Forum and search the classifieds, I haven't found anything current as far as parts that will help me. I was hoping somebody might want the toy box in exchange for some other parts. I can easily get an nv4500 but my concern is overall length with a sprung under Cruiser, your thoughts?

The NV4500 should fit fine but you haven't clarified what your engine is.

Before I tried the plate adapter, I used Advance Adapters long SM465 in an FJ40 behind a 5.0L TBI engine. The NV4500 will be roughly the same size when you account for the adapter.
Small block 350 to either the Envy 4500 or the fully rebuilt sm465 that I already have into a stock 3 speed transfer case. I'm just unsure of my rear Driveline length when staying sprung under

Any

Any pics of you4 set up? Particularly the rear drive shaft. Thanks again

I’ll take the toy box. I run the AA long adapter on my sm465 to early 3 sd t-case. No issues. Why not use what you have. ? I know it is probably overkill for gearing options. But if you already have it why not use it. I may just swap to an Orion. Do you need the plate adapter for any particular reason. If your not going SOA that stuff should all fit fine in there. With no driveshaft issues.

I haven't mocked up the drivetrain in my rig yet so I'm basing my plan on information I've gleaned from this site and others. Originally I was going to go spring over with fj60 axles but now I'm not really building a rock crawler and I thought that sprung under that drivetrain would be too long. Based on your picture that looks like a sweet setup, I don't see a problem at all with that rear drive shaft.

Thank you. Know of anybody running sprung under with the sm465 toy box combination?

I don’t think there will be much of a difference. Between spring over and spring under really. If u look at my t-case ebrake to the crossmember tube In the frame. U can see my t-case is almost in the stock location. So I think you should be fine with a almost stock length rear drive shaft. As long as all your stuff fits in front of the crossmember tube your good I have seen guys cut the frame crossmember tube right out of the frame and still run a short driveshaft in there or guys running an automatic tranny they still seem to stuff a short drive shaft in there and make it work. Just something for you to think about.

I like it! Holding that Chevy farther forward sounds good to me, I hear that guy's report overheating issues when they hold it back against the firewall to get the shifter in a good position. I appreciate the information in the picture, I'll update my plan when I decide what I'm doing with that toy box. I already own it and if it doesn't gain anything to go to the advance adapters adapter then I'll just leave it in there, though I probably won't use it much

I don't know how thick a toybox is. I ran a SM420 with a Dana model 18 t/case, using a 4.4" novak trans to t/case adaptor, sprung under. Driveshaft length was not a problem at all. Being an offset rear output the t/case output is much lower and more in line to the rear diff. The overall length of the tranny/adaptor and T/case was about the same as a stk FJ40 trans and t/'case outputs. The rear crossmember was not removed. The SM465 is 1.6" longer than a 420. SM465 is 12" the 420 is 10.4. Of course it all depends where the motor is located. I also have a sbc, nv4500, stk 40 t/case using a AA conversion kit, sprung under in a 40 and that drive shaft is very short.

Sounds like I should just stick with the components that I already have

Your original questions seems odd to me. Running a NV4500 would seem you are looking with something with more highway gears and a moderate crawl ratio. Going to SM465, toybox, stk t/case sort of implies more crawling and moderate highway. It all depends what your plans are with your 40.

when I started my build it was nearly 20 years ago and I was building for more Offroad, SOA, dual transfer case, fj60 axles, 350, sm465 and so on. Now my desire has changed to just make it a driving Landcruiser again which is why I was thinking I didn't need a double transfer case, but looking at the adapters I don't gain anything by getting rid of the toy box so if I just keep it and use it as my adapter here I am. The nv4500 transmission has come down in price considerably over the last two decades and I was entertaining the thought of going that route for the overdrive option, but in order to keep things simple I will just stick with what I've got apparently. Sorry if I wasn't clear from the beginning, choices and options don't help a personality like mine
