land of enchantment, at least for now
I just bought a '74 pig and am curious about the motor. I thought the oil filter was located on the driver's side on all F engines, but this one is in the same place as my 2F and the oil filler is in the valve cover. IIRC, it's a 1/74 production date.

It has pto and a/c; I want to put on power steering. Anyone have power steering and a/c on an F? Not sure how I can fit all the accessories with the air cleaner assy where it is. The compressor is a york high and upright on the passenger side.

Was thinking about putting a 2f carb and air cleaner assy to free up that space, but I haven't determined if I can do that with the cable linkage or if I'll need the rigid linkage to change carbs. Thoughts?

thanks,
David

Hey David,

I am thinking a picture is worth a thousand words with relation to your question...

If people could see your AC comp w/ relation to the air cleaner, we might get on track with your question...

Do you know what kind of PS you want to do? 60 series? Sag? Minitruck?

What kind of PS pump do you want to run? Toy or Sag?

Help us to help you!

Thanks for the congrats. This is actually pig #2, but I'll probably sell the first one since this one is cleaner and a 4 speed.

I seem to have precious little time, so I haven't spent much of it here on Mud. Do I need a red star or anything like that to post pics?

I plan to do fj60 steering, probably with a saginaw pump, but I'm not opposed to a Toy pump if it helps the fit. I don't plan to run anything bigger than 33s on this so the Toy pump should be fine.

thanks,
David

Yes you need a silver star to post more than just a few pics - it goes to a great cause to support this site.

If you don't want to buy a star right now, then PM me and I'll give you my email address and post them for you.

I was just telling my wife about the 73-74 ND A/C system in the 55s at dinner this evening! Interesting timing.

The upright York mounts on a custom passenger side motor mount that doubles as a horizontal pedestal for the York. The 55s came with a special harmonic balancer with 3 pulley grooves, with the inboard one being oversized for the AC a lot like the ones on the FJ60s.

IMO, I would slow down a LOT on the PS thing until I could determine if that 30 year old stuff still all works and, if not, what it would cost to repair it. This COULD have a lot to do with how you proceed.

My 71 pig has ND A/C also, but the York compressor was mounted horizontally and the blower was under the glovebox. The PO removed most of it because the compressor went out, I got it in a box, so I'm not sure about the pulleys, etc on that one.
But the '74 is just as you described. Supposedly it was blowing cold air 10 years ago when the motor was rebuilt and parked. A/C is not my biggest concern now, as I discovered last night cylinder #5 has zero compression.

I bought it from a guy that bought it, decided it would be too much work, and wanted to make a little money on it. He had had it for about a month and hadn't done anything except put a battery in it. I offered less than his asking because the engine was an unknown (supposedly 100 miles on a rebuild, with a handwritten receipt dated 1996), so he offered to start it. We got fresh gas to it and cranked it up. It ran but the carb flooded and it died. Last night's compression test was a sad moment, when the cylinders went from 145 to zero.

Hopefully it can be fixed without too much expense, otherwise I'll start thinking about a v8 or 4bt swap.

But I was hoping to get it on the road with minor engine work (carb), disk brakes at all 4 and power steering. Time will tell, the oil pan may come off tonight.

BTW, would a '74 F engine have ports in the head for an air rail?
