Hey ya’ll, BigZ here,
I bought 1999 LC a couple weeks ago after trading in my 2018 Tacoma. Wife and I are looking to simplify our lives and I want get into Overlanding and make it a family affair.

Got the rig back from the mechanic after taking care of a few things. We noticed that there was a ton a brake fluid below the MC and ABS booster/pump.

It seems like fluid was leaking from the seals but it’s hard to tell. So I’ll be looking into the cause and solution.

Other than that and the few small issues this thing is a tank!

Looking forward to getting to know some of you and going on some runs.

This is the only picture I have so far

Hi

:flipoff2:

Traditional mud welcome utilized in other sections. I'm new to the 100 forum and assume it works here as well

Congratulations on the 100! It looks great!

Brake master cylinders are a common issue, you can read about them on the FAQ page pinned to the top. I luckily haven't had to mess with mine, but I know there are rebuild kits out there.

When I got my '98, I observed a lot of brake fluid below the m/c and thought there was a leak. Turned out that the PO had overfilled the reservoir and brake fluid was coming out of the cap. I removed the excess fluid with a syringe. Check the reservoir level.

I noticed the reservoir level was above the max line so I removed the extra. I’m now below the line after a day of driving. Im going to keep an eye on the level but I shouldn’t be losing brake fluid if there’s not a leak, right?

Welcome and congratulations on your new rig!

Brake fluid should hold level.
That said: Brake fluid level will drop just a tiny bit over 30-40K miles. It's from pad wear leading to more space for fluid behind pistons of calipers.

Over filling is an issues we see all to often, factory is very clear DON't DO IT! When overfilled, as we brake, it blows out cap and or grommets at bottom of reservoir.
Make sure to read the embossed instruction on the brake fluid reservoir.

Test for leak: After following topping procedure (evacuating accumulator). Turn IG key on for first time. Don't start or you'll not hear motor. Time how long brake booster motor runs. Factory spec is 30 to 40 seconds. You will see fluid level draw down in reservoir as accumulator fills building pressure in brake system.

Inspect all brake lines and calipers just after actively and aggressively using brakes with IG key ON (fluid dries up if you wait).

Make sure all bleeders have a good rubber cap.
Missing or leaky rubber caps will damage bleeders (rust) and may damage caliper.

I've a new inspection I do. I pull boot off wire from ABS (black unit on side of brake master) to booster motor (under master). I'm looking for corrosion on wires & fasteners. "Wire is within circle #89639B"

Welcome!

Make sure to wash the fluid off really well. That stuff kills paint. Also, read up on how to check the fluid level if you haven't yet. I know that in the later models you have to push the pedal 40 times with the ignition off to depressurize the system.
