I had the starter and battery replaced a few months ago. Finally getting the truck on the road. The clutch went out leaving the FJ parked. I was starting it at least once a week. At one point I had to jump the battery. It was starting on first turn of the ignition. When I tried to start it yesterday it almost turned over--then nothing. The battery is charged, but nothing happens when I turn the key. I am a Land Cruiser fan but not a mechanic. Any suggestions?

It is customary for the Original Poster (you) to include specifics such as year and engine, maybe what starter (gear reduction?).
Sounds like your battery is weak but most LandCruiser electrical problems are due to bad grounds.
Do you have a voltmeter? You'll want one eventually.
Pics are appreciated and stop calling it an FJ.

Are your terminals clean and tight? Look at the cables, corrosion can crawl under the insulation rendering them nearly useless. Have your battery load tested - you could have volts but no amps to do the work.

Know any car people? They should be able to help you figure out what is wrong in like 2 minutes.

Those battery terminals are likely corroded under the bolts. Remove the neg, take it apart and clean. Then do the +, put it back on then the neg.

Thank you for your response--until yesterday it was starting on first try. I will be consulting with car people--I was hoping that there was something I might be able to try in the interim.

I would replace the positive terminal to start, you need a good contact on both post and those clamp style terminals are good for emergency situation.
Check all your ground connections for corrosion too.

Lets focus on the New starter you had replaced a few months ago and also your steering column mounted 4-wire Electrical Key switch that has the 4pin green plug on the end coming out of your black plastic column clam shell upper column covers ....
- more then several Detailed and up close and personal Photos of your starter where Both the B+ battery cable Lug bolts on and also the factory Black w/ white tracer stripe plugs into / clips on to the rear of your starter same area as the B+ battery cable
- these system parts and wires / circuits are directly related to each other and a solid place to FSM format : inspect , confirm and verify
- note : please take a moment and wipe off any finger prints and Land Cruiser stuff from all your camera phone lenses , this does make a difference in every way you might not think possible ? like color coded tracer stripe correct accurate visual Confirm and Verify .......
.
the below is a 1/79 FJ55 that came to live at my shop as its 24/7 care taker for the owners many years ago , this is a day 1 example of how i got to know my special Girl
BIG YELLOW :D
thanks
.
below these this is what we need to see well , and from different angles , underneath , top side etc ....

Whats going on with these extra fuses?
Am I seeing things, or are there a bunch of extra fuses squeezed in between each pair of holders??

Id start by checking that you have 12v at the fuse box, and at the ignition switch connector, and at the coil when switched on.

Download the correct electrical diagram for your year (search it here somewhere), buy a multimeter if you don't have one, and start hunting for the broken connection.

Good eye. That would complicate things, but would also explain a weak battery.
