Hi all.

I want to put some new speakers in my truck. I have a new radio installed that has a pre amp out so, I was thinking a two channel amp with some components.

Right now, I just have that under dash, speaker set up so I know there will be cutting involved.

Any suggestions i.e. speaker depth issues for door panel etc.

I really like the Kappa Perfects in the 6.5". I will run a 100x2 for the front since the Kappa's like a lot of power.

Thanks

No one?????

Is anyone on this forum any more ( :

Are you in a regular cab or extra cab? I used to have 2 6x9's with a little amp in my 92 pickup reg cab with 6 1/2's in the doors. Yes you have to cut. I had the "pros" do it for me back then. I put some in my FJ60 not too long ago as well as a number of toyotas over the years. You need to take your inner door panel off and see what's in there and see if you have room. When you buy new speakers they come with a template that shows you what size the hole needs to be. I have used 1 inch particle board to cut spacers out the size of the templates or even a little bit larger if there will be interference inside the door with the regulator or window itself. I myself got away from regular cab toys as quick as possible because even a little 6x9 box behind the bench seat makes things even more cramped quicker. My 4Runner has 4" dash speakers, 6.5" ft. door speakers, 4 6"x9"s, a sub box with 3 10" subs, a 4channel amp, and a 2channel amp, and a ton of room to spare. If you are going to install this yourself, get a good jigsaw or nippler, a tape measure, tin snips, a file, marker and take your time. They will fit in the door. I don't think you'll need spacers but they are easy to make out of wood. I coat them in roll on bedliner after I cut the spacers out, makes them look a bit more "professional." Ill get a pic up later today of the ones I made for my fj60.

Also, don't quote me on this but I believe that if you go to a real car audio shop and talk to someone that knows what they are talking about they can look up whether or not you will have much cutting involved. Some doors have speaker cut outs in the sheet metal even if they didn't come with speakers, because it could have been an option. I have seen turbo trucks and nicer sr5's with door pockets that had speakers in them, you may be able to buy just the interior panels at junkyards with these door pockets to make your life easier, but you will probably have to be creative.

Thanks man.

I have installed several stereos so I am not worried there. Was more curious on the fitment issues. Sounds like they will work.

I will yank off the panel and see.

for any sound system, no just car stearo, the only way to know if yours sounds good is to listen to it.

the best receiver(in-dash head unit) + the best spearker does NOT mean the best sound. just like different guns like different ammo, you will never know. if it doesn't sound good, no matter how good they fit, they are just piece of you know what. find a car audio store who carries your head unit with most speakers hooked up, listen to them and listen to the type of sound you would play in your truck the most. there isn't "magic speaker" that plays everything good with everything. pick few pairs of speakers then you find out which one fit the best.

I just installed 6.5 components in my regular cab 88. It has the vent windows but, like the other guy said, it's pretty easy to make spacers if you have interference. Here are some pics/info I wrote up on UltimateYota:

I installed my deck that I bought a week or 2 ago. I found the exact same model that I have in the 4Runner on the clearance rack at Circuit City and I really like the deck so I figured I would run one here too. It was really cheap too. It is the JVC KD-G-420:

The other day I stopped by the local audio shop and talked to the guys there. I can build a pretty decent stereo system when I have some room but there is very little space to mount stuff in here. I had planned to get some middle of the road 4" for the dash and some 6.5"s for the doors straight off the deck. When I mentioned this to them they said that every time they have seen that setup in one of these trucks the 4" speakers actually make it sound worse because the mounting locations suck so much as far as acoustics. They said I would be better off getting some 6.5" components and an amp. They recommended some MB Quarts that, ironically, they had a whole pile of. I told them I would think about it. I went and researched them and everyone hates them for some reason. So, I kept searching and found some that seem to be a good compromise since I'm only going to have 2 speakers (plus they were on sale at Crutchfield). I settled on the Polk db6500s.. They'll hopefully be here in a few days:

I had an old Rockford 2 channel 150W amp that I used to run my subs off of. It did well and was in the range recommended for the Polks. I wired that up to the new deck and installed it under the seat. I can't wait to see how it sounds with the new speakers. It is the Rockford Fosgate RF 2.6X. I can't find a pic right now but will have actual pics when I finish the install (I left the camera out in the truck).

Amp setup as of Saturday (I just hooked up an old 6x9 in a box to get me through the weekend):

Today I went out to the boonies to pick up a new seat from Boheefus off of TTORA. When I got back my new speakers were waiting and so I pushed off work a little more and knocked out the install. Here we go...

One speaker installed, the other hole cut, and the first time it occurred to me to take pics :) :

Speaker installed. Yes, I slipped with the drill and poked a hole in my door panel. Yes, I am mad about that. I'll try to fix it later:

Sorry this came out fuzzy.. This is how I ran the speaker wire from the door. There is a hole that goes through the hinge so I just made it a little bigger and ran the wire behind the hinge so it wouldn't get pinched. That goop on there is silicone just in case:

Here's where it comes into the cab:

This is where I mounted the crossovers. Yeah, it's not ideal to have them that far away from the speakers but I think it'll be fine. They are mounted very solid with 2 self-tapping screws and are pretty much concealed by the seatbelt and kinda behind the seat:

Amp fully hooked up. I will probably clean it up a bit with some zip ties and stuff after I tweak on it a few days:

Tweeter mounting (I just used velcro so it's easy to move if I need to and I didn't have to drill any holes.. I just tucked the wires behind the ends of the dash):

BTW.. This setup sounds really good for a single cab. It has some decent bass for just 2 6.5s and the tweeters are really nice and smooth. Plus, I really didn't have to do much tweaking on the settings and such.

Thanks man very much.

Quick questions:

1- Why didn't you mount the crossovers right beside the amp under the seat?
2- Did you have to cut into the door (metal casing) or was that already there to allow for the magnet depth?
3- Where did your amp B+ exit the cab and enter the engine bay to get to the battery?
4- Why didn't you mount the tweeters on the door?

I ran those Polks in my old 100 series cruiser. Great sound for the money in my opinion.

Thanks again man.

That is a good point except for the fact that you will never know what any system sounds like until you get it into the car i.e. you really can't go to a shop and listen to x or y and then think it is going to be great in your car. The acoustic properties of the vehicle are entirely different than that of a store/show room.

That is why it is good to hear examples from people with similar cars.

Thanks

1- I didn't want the crossovers to be so near to the amp because of interference, noise and such because of the high power. Maybe paranoid but it made sense to me ;p. Plus, there really is no use for the place where I mounted them and they're not getting tangled up with all the amp crap.
2- I did have to cut the holes. You can see it in the first pic of the cab on the driver's door.
3- I forgot to take a pic of that. I cut a slit in the boot for the engine harness and ran it through there. I just sealed it up with some silicone. If you end up running it up the other side you can normally poke the cable through with the speedo cable.
4- The imaging is better with them on the dash and it's one less wire to run to the door. It would look better in the door, but sounds better on the dash.

Thanks.

Did you test the tweeter on the door for imaging or are you using a general concept i.e. common to other cars?

Don't forget you want to run the power to the amp as far away from the audio cables from the deck to the amp. I did this a long time ago on my first install and I could hear the engine through my stereo. Noise supressors work really well if you experience this and can't find another way to remedy it. The speakers under my dash don't really bother me. My stereo is set up so that if I take out my sub box I might hear those little dash speakers. They are really just set up to help balance out the sub box. All my 6x9's and my 6.5's are sony speakers. The 3 10's are old Fosgate Punch XLC's (gotta be 7 years old or more) and the dash speakers are Bose. It has a really well rounded sound. I think generally as long as you get a decent head unit where you can really dial your balance in between each set of speakers, you can make almost any speaker combo sound decent within reason. If you are trying to slam MC Hammer and break glass with your bass, you're gonna need some power, not just subs. All the crappy sounding stereos I've seen were when some kid was trying to be a gangsta with 2 12's and some dinky little amplifier. It just doesnt work

Yeah man.

I usually run one to one side and one to the other of the console (if mounting under the seat).

Thankfully, the carpet on these trucks are easy to snake. So, wiring is never an issue.

As well, seats are easy to remove/replace. Apart from the poor acoustics/door cutting, an installer's dream.

Thanks all

Nah, I was just going on the concept and it was easier to not run the extra wires to the door. Not to mention that I only had an afternoon for the install. I'm sure it would still sound good on the doors and I know it would look better.

Also, you are right about the ease of install in these things. Once I pulled the seat I just pulled the carpet up enough to push the wires under the carpet to their destinations. I ran my CB antenna cable at the same time. Also, I ran my RCA cable with the power cables because I didn't think before I did it but I have had no interference issues.
