New Shoes from the Cruiser! Toyo MT 255/85/16

I had a blow out one of my Yokohama Geolander A/T just before Christmas. Now most people would be upset getting a flat in a snowstorm when it's -10 but I was pumped! as it gave me an excuss to order the tires I have been eyein for some time!

I got a set of Toyo M/T 255/85/16 mounted on 16X7 Factory Toyota steel wheels they are Tacoma and Sequoia spare wheel rims. I ordered them from my local yota dealer $80 each! can't beat that! and I got the tires for $245 each Canadian of course guys!

I tired them on the truck but the rims where just touching the Tie Rods so I bit the bullet and got a set of Mr. Gasket 1/4 wheel spacers. I dislike wheel spacers.

The Tires arrived and I got them all mounted up and so far so good no rubbing when driving around town and they seem to be as smooth and quiet as my A/T's I will try to flex it out sometime to see if I am going to have contact anywhere.

I was a little nervous not sure what the Black rims would look like on the Blue truck but I am very happy with the way it looks! I think the truck looks so much better now! I always felt the 32X11X15 looked too fat for the truck ( they came on it)

I'm a fan of the Toyo MT's. They have a much stiffer sidewall and seem to hook up well. I have a friend who rocks them on a lifted Tundra and he swears by them...

GLTHFJ60, Yeah! I remember you being there! that was a great day! when I order a set of side panel I think I will go down again! You had the white 60 how is the truck doing??? I am still only dreaming about the turbo! but I need to get on it as these tires have sucked some power from an already underpowered rig! it sure has changed a fair bit from then I bought it!

goodol84, They are Light force Striker 170s with yellow lens on them. very nice lights! ,thin beam thou, that combined with the Hellas replacement lens I put in the original spots makes for a very bright road!

The rims are 16" X 7"

The part number of the rim is - 42601-AF010

You will also need the 1/4 Mr Gasket wheel spaces for the front to clear the tie rods can't remember the part number maybe 2376? I am running them just on the front but think I will put a set on the rear to even things up.

I am very happy with the tires so far. it snowed about 10cm the other night and I went out for a drive the next morning to test them out

Snow Review

Conditions:

Slush Cover paved road - I am very happy with the way they performed in the slush I was very Hesitant to get M/T as my primary tire as there is a lot of snowy/slushie roads here. They seem to hold on about as good as my geolanders did @ the end of there life and the geos did have some life left in them. I would say I am pleasantly surprised at there performance I thought I was going to have to get them siped (which I am still thinking about)

Hard packed snow road

I am very impressed with the way they seem to handle the hard pack when going into turns aggressively the fronts really seem to dig into the hard pack as you go around the turn. it might be the sharp shoulders. my friend who was riding with me was very impressed with the speed I could go around corners and not slip! (he drives a A4 with snow tires) and so was I. I don't think they are as good as my geos but still I am very happy with there snow performance! totally acceptable.

Deep snow parking lots!

amazing! I don't know if it's cause they are a little thinner, they do have a more aggressive tread, but they work very well in the deep snow! I am really looking forward to doing some snow wheeling!

Overall there is not as much traction as my Geos but I think I will be satisfied with there overall snow performance.


I have always ran snow tires on my cars before and wanted to on the cruiser but could not find a set big enough for my liking, of course 2 days after I ordered these I found out Yokohama is making big snow tires now! Blah! might have to get more tires! I have a V70 AWD (the 60 is my daily driver!) with Blizzacks that is magic in the snow and I am always singing the praises of snow tires! but these M/T have really impressed me! The overall ride is stiffer. I also notice less bouncing around and the Handling on dry roads around corners is much better not sure if it's the 16" rims or the Toyos stiffer side wall. I am running them at 34 PSI right now as per Toyos Load chart.

Yup, mine's the white 60 and she's doing well! The salt is no good but that's something we just have to live with.

Well there is plenty of snow to play in.... we should do something about that - can't make the meeting - heading up North to play in the snow

You mentioned about snow - you should ask Romey (Jerome) what he is running. He has an HDJ81 - when we were wheeling in Nov. he had them on and did very well even in the deep fluffy stuff. He was way more glued down in the road (hard pack) than the rest of us running muds and of course Crushers tractor tires!

I did a speed test today with my GPS and it seems the speedo is spot on at 100KM/H I have a H55F, T-Case from 86 FJ60 and 4.11's. It was a great surprise!

Humm thats intresting info I drive on a lot of gravel roads in the summer and got the M/T because of there reputation as a tough tire I think I will hold off on the siping.
