Hi all,
Im from Aus and have recently done an LS1 conversion in my 80 and have also had the A442f Auto built by Rodney and the boys at Wholesale autos here in Melbourne. (Extreme Box with manual valve body and stand-alone compushift computer) I want to get the most out of the gearbox and the manual valve body by somehow replacing the stock Toyota shifter that has the overdrive button on it. I dont know much about the shift workings of this gearbox but does anybody think it would be possible to install a ratchet style shifter or similar, to run through all 4 gears? Even though overdrive(or 4th gear) is electronically selected? Or does any know if i could somehow control the actual gear shifting through the Compushift computer and use a "tiptronic" style gear lever out of a newer model car?
Does this sort of make sense to anyone, or does it just sound right in my head? :hhmm:

Cheers

It is definately possible. You really need to speak to the people who build it all though, because they will have a better understanding of the modifications done, and how that will affect what you want to do.

If anything the compushift computer will be the limiting factor. The mechanical aspects of the shift lever are quite simple. You only need the lever to move from P to D. Then the up and downshift motion is completely electronic. It potentially makes the 2 and L positions redundant.

I have thought about doing it to a bog stock a442, and though that it might be as simple as interupting the signals to the shift solenoids with some basic wiring. I had an amusing idea of using one of those 4 position shifters from the sega racing machines :D Never came to fruition though.

Thanks rove, Sega Racing Machine, Nice! :) I hadnt hought of that, might try something else first. I didnt realise that the lever was only needed to control P to D, and that the gears were electronic. I'll have a chat to the guys who built it, but i wanted some other opinions and ideas first. Has anyone used the Compushift controller before? even on other cars? Im still to have a good in depth look at what it can and cant do. Only got the gearbox in last weekend so havent had much time to play with it.
Any other ideas would be awesome
