Originally was hell bent in buying an FJ80 but this deal came up on my daily CL search and couldn't resist. Picked up a 1986 4runner 22re with 136k original miles, SAS leaf, high steer, 35s, 5.29s, and locked. Unfortunately it's an automatic and has a fair amount of body rust. Got it for $2500 intending on it being a project no matter what condition what I bought was in.

She's no beauty queen but with a baby on the way I couldnt pass up a trail ready rig to do budget friendly sweat equity type improvements.

1st improvement: Valves were clicking pretty bad, so adjusted the valves today and man, she's a sewing machine. Can't believe how easy that was

Things I could use some guidance on:
1. Burns oil until it warms up, my old ranger did that, so I'm guessing sloppy valve seats?
2. Idle changes between cold and hot, and some times without warning.
3. Check engine light comes on when I rev it (I have gotten a chance to run the codes yet) .

I'm pretty happy with getting an old 22re, everything is so cheap, there's no much support and aftermarket.

Looking forward to talking with you guys.

Congrats on the purchase. On the cold/hot idle thing I have a few ideas.

1. It could possibly be air in the cooling system, so burping it is the common recommendation to get the air out. Air pockets might be trapped in there and if they make their way to the temp sensors on the front of the intake, could be the cuprit.

2. You can pull both the CSI timer switch and ECU temp sensor from the front of the intake below the throttle body and wire brush them really well to clean off the years of corrosion. Lot of posts on other forums about how this might help.

3. Your AFM flapper door might be sometimes getting stuck open, which tends to cause a high idle. Happened to me, so you can pull off your air intake hose and just look in there. I just cleaned mine really well and have not really had trouble since.

As for the check engine light, could be lots of things, so yeah pull some codes. Good luck.

thanks, I'll give those all a once over
