You did the right thing

"Needless to say, I'll never buy another vehicle unless I see it in person first. This trip ended up costing me almost $700 and I didn't come home with anything!"

That may be true but you made the right choice, you will save more than 700 during the build by getting one in better shape

I bought mine in northern calif and had it shipped to florida for $900, so the shipping was not so bad in the overall scheme of things

If you buy an older cruiser you will probably put 10k in it so you wont get off cheap on a build. The advantage is building what you want and seeing how it's done and getting to know the vehicle inside out in the process

Otherwise buy a turn key ride for 5-10k and you will probably be okay. Having said that I know everyone had a budget so:

Where are you at? What are you looking to spend?

read and heed the price guide, my friend!

x2. i bought mine for $3350, right now i have $8500 in it and its not a rolling chassis quite yet but i do have all the parts to get it to that stage. i figure by the time im done ill have $12-13k but it will be exactly what i want.

Thanks for your support! I'm still pretty bummed out about the whole ordeal. Like I said earlier though, "life lesson learned". I think my next cruiser will be one that I have seen in person and inspected, or one that I have extensive pics of to verify it's condition. I'm thinking of just coughing up the money and spending 2-3K on one that I know is in decent shape and runs. I'm pretty sure that the u-joint breaking in our tow vehicle was a sign from God that I didn't need that one. Once I saw it in person it was more trouble than I wanted to mess with. The front cowl was good and the structural body framework was in decent shape, but tub sheet metal would all need replaced.
My brother found one for me in my hometown that is a bank repo and was up for silent auction. It didn't sell b/c they didn't get a high enough bid for it, but they wouldn't say how high it was bid to. The lowest bid was $400 was all they would say. I guess they're putting it up for sale for a set price next, but I haven't heard what that is yet. We'll see!!!
