she seemed to think it was reasonably likely that they would need to wait for one to come from Japan. That's fine with me as I'd rather have 1 fresh out of the factory than 1 that has sat around on a lot for several months. I'm willing to wait so long as I can keep the loaner vehicle while I wait.

I assume (ass-u-me) Ira Lexus is responsible for the insurance coverage on the loaner and has adequete coverage. Did you sign any papers when they gave you the loaner?

geez, I never thought folks who buy brand new 06s would have time to spend on a forum like this...! shouldn't you guys be writing legal forms or putting braces on kids or something...? and generally refuse to mix with greasy-nail riff raffs like us? :)

Funny, my thoughts exactly!, i'm still stuck at the "buy em 2 or 3 years old" level..if I want to keep the other vehicles going and the mortgage paid ,that is!

But as long as you got one......

In Massachusetts, my insurance covers me - if I rent a car, I don't need to purchase additional rental insurance. Te papers I had to sign when I got the loaner were to agree to return it and confirm that I had it, etc.

I'm a software engineer, so no legal forms to write. I'm not married, have no kids, have no mortgage, my rent is dirt cheap cause I live with a relative, and have no debt other than my car loan. I make pretty good, but not spectacular money, but given my situation, I can pretty easily afford to buy new. Having bought used vehicles in the past a few times, I'm hesitant to do it again unless finances dictate it - I'd rather know exactly what the history is on the vehicle (aside from anything the dealer did before selling it).

As to the time to be spending here, this is a hobby for me, so I make the time for it and without kids to chase around, it's pretty easy.

Here's a pic of me playing off road with my former Land Rover (I'm driving, not the guy behind the Disco):

MaBelleTrail.jpg

This was at a trail known as MaBelle out in Western, MA. At some point, I will hopefully take my LX-470 out to play, but probably not for the first few years.

my comment was tongue-in-cheek of course, but didn't come out so well. So let me clarify.
I am genuinely pleasantly surprised to see that this site covers a wide range of demographics, not only the grease-monkey (bless their hearts) as one would anticipate but also lots of white collar folks, professionals etc. (The latter much more on the 100 forum likely), but this site must be OK if these busy people still take the time (too much in my case) to come and chat here... Addicting hobby isn't it?

I'm one of "those guys that pushes legal forms". I find this site to be a much needed diversion from all the other desk jockey stuff I do all day long. Plus, and better yet, there is so much great information to be had from those that are handy with a wrench. My thanks to you. This site adds immensely to the ownership experience of my first Toyota product.

Bite your tongue;p

I'm no attorney and we haven't had kids yet but my wife and I are both the children of immigrants to this country and both from very, very humble beginnings. Both of us were the first in our family to graduate from college and we've both worked very hard to put ourselves in a position where we own our own home (welll, technically Chase Manhattan owns it:) ), we're blessed to be doing pretty well, and frankly this is one way that we can enjoy our good fortune.

I'm in the same boat here. Parents were immigrants and I was also the first in my family to graduate college. I remember graduation day, my dad was more excited than me.

I spend way too much time on these types of boards, but as someone else said, it's a hobby.

greynolds,

based on the above, is it safe to say this is your "first" new car experience?...

Not sure how you'd come to that conclusion, but no it's not safe to say that. You asked, but I'll still apologize in advance for the long post that follows :).

Let's see:

1986 Pontiac Sunbird Turbo - used (bought in 1988)
1989 Honda Civic - new
1995 Mitsubishi Montero - new
1995 Land Rover Discovery - used (bought in 1997)
2000 Honda Accord - new
2005 Nissan Pathfinder - new
2006 Lexus LX-470 - new

The Sunbird was trouble and it was a good thing I bought an extended warranty with it. I don't remember all the specifics, but it went through 2 engines and a turbo. By the time the dealership finally fixed it, I traded it in for the Honda Civic. I actually got more for the Sunbird on trade in than I paid for it thanks to the new engine and turbo.

The Civic was great, but at the time I bought it I was still in school and couldn't afford to get it with A/C. Once I started working full time, I had a 120 mile round trip for work, so A/C became a priority.

The Montero was great, but I wanted to get into off roading and aftermarket support for anything Mitsubishi was and is pretty pathetic.

The Discovery was, well a Land Rover :grinpimp:. Up till now, it was probably my favorite vehicle overall - I'm guessing the LX may take the torch once I get settled in. It was also the most frustrating vehicle I've owned in some ways - such a great design, but such poor quality control. There's a very enthusiastic Land Rover community just about everywhere. Lots of discussion forums, lots of clubs, lots of opportunity to go out and off road with other Land Rovers and the vehicles can tackle just about anything so long as the idiot behind the wheel knows what to do.

As gas prices started creeping up and my Land Rover started evolving into more trail beast than daily driver, I decided it would be prudent to get something to commute to work in, so I got the Honda Accord. As one would expect, it was a typical Honda - drive it, change the oil, repeat. Nothing spectacular, but extremely reliable.

Over the next few years, I was finding less and less time to get out and play with the Land Rover, keeping 2 vehicles wasn't really very practical (the insurance alone gets to be cumbersome), but I definitely wanted to have something to drive that was big enough for camping trips, had 4 wheel drive, etc. so I decided to sell the Land Rover and trade in the Honda for a new SUV.

My first thought was Toyota, but the 4Runner was a bit cramped and the current Land Cruiser struck me as underpowered for the money, so I didn't even bother looking at the Land Cruiser (or LX) - nor was I really interested in paying THAT much for a vehicle. Anything from the domestic manufacturers (ie: Ford, GM, Jeep) was out for concerns over quality control. Land Rover was out for the same reason. That didn't leave too many options in my $25-40k target price range. The 2005 Nissan Pathfinder seemed to be just right. Rugged enough for mild off roading. Big enough that I was comfortable in the drivers seat for long trips. Plenty of cargo space. Reasonably priced and had lots of power and features for the money. Unfortunately, I didn't adequately try out the automatic climate control system (I had never owned a vehicle with automatic climate control before) and later found that it didn't have enough adjustment range at the low end to give me a comfortable temperature. It may seem like a minor point, but it was driving me nuts. So I lived with it for a while figuring I had to at least get a year out of it - which I just barely did. There were a few other minor things about the Pathfinder (tight on headroom, quality control wasn't where I expected Nissan to be, etc.), but the auto climate control was the biggest complaint.

So I started looking for options again. The Toyota Sequoia was just too big and if I spent that much, I figured the Land Cruiser wasn't that much more, plus the Land Cruiser got the bigger V8 this year. I started looking around, but Land Cruisers were pretty much impossible to come by around here, so I gave the LX a try. The rest is history...

good service department

I've been using the service department at Worburn Toyota for things I can't handle myself. I've had great service and trust them, with my 98 Land Cruiser :)

hey grey congrats very happy for hey you even give me hope they have not been able to fix my rattling sunroof hey this is not just a squek for all you diehards and also i have 1 more comment i work with customers all the time and have to say thanks for being the nice guy and not going balistic like other people have mentioned in this forum yes you were treated bad and it was frustrating but you stuck to your guns and got the job done i am once again happy with the human race

Not one mention in the thread that modifying or tampering with an airbag system is a violation of federal law.
Someone at Lexus' legal department must have advised them of that and in that light replacing the vehicle is their only course.
Congrats. Doubt that they'll chance selling that vehicle unless it's put back to original compliance.

Got a call from the general manager at Ira Lexus today. He said that getting silver is going to be a long wait, but there's a white one with ivory leather coming into New Jersey tomorrow fresh from Japan. He gave me the choice of waiting (for an unknown amount of time) for silver or going with white. I decided to go with white, so I should have it in the next week or so - not sure how long it will take to get from New Jersey to Massachusetts (I would assume however long it takes to pass through customs plus a few days to get it up here on the car carrier).

He seems to have no hard feelings and a good sense of humor about the whole thing - it is after all a hassle for them just as much as it is for me, so it's nice to see we can all get along. Obviously joking, he mentioned that as soon as it was on the lot that he'd make sure the GuidePoint guys get right on it . If I had been thinking quickly at the time, my retort would have been, I'll take my 3rd LX-470 in silver please...

As I said before, once the transaction has been completed, I'll post the VIN from the silver one so people can avoid it. In the meantime, they can't sell it as I still own it - no paperwork has been filled out yet. I also still have a few things that belong with it in my possession (all but 1 key, cloth floor mats, trailer hitch accessory kit, etc.).

So it's not just lavaratory smoke detectors! It would be interesting to see the demographics of 100 owners, whether they bought new/used, how many kids, etc.

Congratulations. I've read every posting and think you did a masterful job of handling Ira and Lexus. Depending on the final outcome and your intentions with Ira, you might consider figuring out a way that "we" can show them how much we appreciate their final treatment of you . . . after all, you handled the situation and they finally did the right thing.

Great news.

FWIW, our silver took less than 21 days from the day it first showed as being in port to being ready for delivery here in S. CA.

obviously, you know best what you want/need, but if you want a silver, don't get the white just to save a couple of weeks wait. It'll be with you for a long time. Every time I look at our white 100 I wish it were silver... And I'm dubious that they can't get a silver in a matter of weeks. I think it's more likely that silver is more in demand and they don't want to work out a more costly deal to get one. And I can't believe they could not trade with another dealer network. I thought that was standard procedure.
Anyway, enjoy!

I think I'll be perfectly happy with white and would have actually preferred the ivory interior over stone. I had the equivalent to ivory in my Land Rover Discovery and liked it quite a bit. My Nissan Pathfinder had an interior similar to stone (it was a bit darker) and I was somewhat less happy with that. The lighter color is more cheerful or something :). I've seen a few white LX-470's and LC's around and like the color just fine. I would have outright refused any of the other colors. Black looks stunning for the 2 minutes it can be kept clean (my Land Rover was black), but is impossible to keep looking nice - especially brutal in the winter with salt on the roads. The color samples for Galactic Gray and Cypress Pearl are too dark / don't light my fire (I don't think I've seen either on a real vehicle). And after seeing Sand Dollar Pearl in the showroom and thinking about it more, I just don't care for that color. It's all a matter of personal preference. White and Silver are both relatively easy to keep looking good and are better than most other colors in hot weather. When I initially made the purchase, I pretty much flipped a coin between silver and white (I wanted something light in color), so I honestly feel I'll be happy with white.

As to trading within the dealer network, I suspect they tried, but I'm really not all that concerned with how hard. In all honesty, I was hoping to end up with one fresh off the boat and know that it hasn't been sitting around on a dealer's lot and should have next to nothing on it for mileage. My first one had 50 or so miles on it at delivery because it had been driven from another dealer to Ira Lexus (I'm sure they were very gentle miles too ).
