That clunk is normal. Search "Driveline clunk". Don't panic. Mine has been doing it for 200k.

I linked to Jon's site earlier. "Strife"

I don't know squat. Jon is the expert.

You have a clunk when you let off the gas? Hmmm. I get the clunk when I shift which I know is normal but when you let off the gas? I would look over your U joints. My full size pick ups did it to me when joints were going bad.

Welcome. nice picture of Jack in the LC's native habitat. :flipoff2:
Nice picture of a Land Cruisers in front of it's Native habitat, a gas pump, at 9.5 MPG that truly is our trucks native habitat!!!!

So a full tank netted me 221 miles of driving. Not bad for a truck that needs a tune up.

In other news, my new antenna mast showed up so I can get rid of the duct tape sculpture hanging off of my cruiser.

Id do the math on that to see what your actually using. I'm averaging 10.5 with full armor, 33's and quite a bit of stop and go.

Congratulations on the 91! It looks nice and clean.

I don't mean to derail this thread but, thanks for that information. My rig makes a very faint clunk when I let off the gas too. (sound comes from somewhere near where the gear shift levers are...my best guess) I was secretly worrying about what it could be. Glad to hear it's not an issue!

Now I'm getting a complex. I'll be out running around in it today and I'll listen if mine does it. My transmission only has about 160k on it so its young compared to most out there.....

I made my calculations based on my fill up when the gas light turned on. Fill up was 20.7 gallons, measured until the gas light turned on again, taking 20.8 gallons. :)

Welcome Fresno! I grew up south of you about an hour. HS in Tulare.

I agree about the clunk, but I also wanted to elaborate. Given the truck's age, if you cannot squeeze any grease into the zerts, you may need to have the prop shafts re-built. I remember someone in the 100 series forum doing such a thing and it costing something like $200 each. It basically was tearing the shaft apart, cleaning it inside and out and then reassembly, plus fresh grease. If you find youself in this place, do a search in that forum as well.

Good luck on the "new" LC!

Jonathan

Thanks guys! I just started hearing a clicking sound in the right rear. Kinda odd sound, only made it after making a hard right turn.

Anybody have any recommendations on where I can get my ride worked on here on the valley. Sucks that Fuller's garage is gone.

Working 50 hours a week and having two kids in sports is killing my spare time

There you have it. I've been running my LC around all afternoon. No clunking when letting off the gas.

My 3/4 Ton GMC does it but since it's a 4 door long box you get and live with it. You know what they say about long shafts....

I'll add it to the list. Crap... Haha

It will make the kids tougher paying their own way through college. You can't buy with any amount of money the memories that are made in a loved automobile. Get it trustworthy and get those kids out there!!!!

Everything you just said. The whole reason I fell in love with this beast is because of how much it reminded me of my childhood. My dad and I restored a 1942 dodge carry-all and took all kinds of crazy trips. Very fond memories.

550 bucks for the strife tune up. Lmao. Wow

Congratulations on the new-to-you 91. Sounds like you got a good deal.
Valley Hybrids & Cruiser Brothers in Stockton for Cruiser work (also, go to the 60 section and look under the Cruiser Mechanics sticky).

The driveline clunk is normal (it's the same on my 91 and my 88). Pull the driveshaft, clean and lube the splines, check and service the U-joints. That's about it.

Like others, I've gotten OEM parts from the local dealers, online dealers, ToyotaPartsDeal.com, eBay, part outs on the Mud Classifieds, Craigslist, @beno, Specter Off Road, and wherever I find whatever I need.

Get a Factory Service Manual, learn and do, and get it out there!

If you look on @jonheld website he has it PDF. There was one for sale on the classifieds. If you really want to boggle your brain start reading about the transmission. That book makes my head hurt. Oh, and glossary? Evidently something the Nihonese don't have in thier language. Book mark everything. Because once you loose your spot it's hard to find again. He's the yoda (no pun intended) of the 91-92 years.

Obviously you need to check the u joints and probably replace them. But there is still likely driveline clunk in the 91-92.

When you pull the drive shaft to replace the u joints (kind of a pain to change them but not impossible. I just lock the CDL by pushing the button then remove one drive shaft at a time so you can still drive the truck in front or rear wheel drive). Make sure you mark the drive shaft and flange BEFORE you remove it so you know how it goes back on. Use a hammer and stamp or something to put a mark that won't wash off. Then pull the drive shaft apart and clean out all of the old grease. Fill with grease but take the grease zerk off when pushing it back together. This will allow the excess to squirt out. If you don't do this you won't be able to compress it and could drop it on your face and break a tooth (ask me how I know). Repeat for the other driveshaft.
