What is the paint code on your truck? Mine is a 1994 and has the 4K1 code. I am thinking about options for some body work next spring and I am curious to know if the 91-92 fenders and paint codes are the same.
Thats a good question. I haven't gotten into that yet but I found some new door handles so I'll be needing to figure that out soon.

Some would disagree with me but powder coating isn't all that great. I'm a contractor and i watch powder coating peel off trailers all the time. I dont think it will work very well on wheels with oxidation on them, even if it brushed off real well. Thats speculation on my part but touching up the spray paint on the wheels is an easy task.

I can agree with powder coating on trailers, although they do sometimes take quite a beating before it comes off. Manufacturers still like to use it as a selling point as if it's any better than just enamel paint.

If your powder coating shop is doing a good job they will bead blast your wheels first and the PC is not going to peel off. Now if your going to be rock crawling you can't touch up powder coating like you can with paint.

March 2 Status update. Armor complete. Console and Switch bank installed. Tray for second battery is installed. All of the dual battery gear is here except for wire and tools to deal with large wire. Soon.

Mulling about a rebuild or replacement of engine.

Thinking about how to store parts in a box where the spare tire used to be.

Yakima roof rack is on, with 25 year old basket case gear holder. ANNNNNNNNNNDDDDDDD it still fits in the garage!!! Boom!

Think about the back drawers AND trying to bring myself to cough up the cash for a fridge.....

The hood is painted now. Kind of a debacle but used bed liner spray and the scrubbed it with scotch bride pad to remove MOST of the evidence of spray paint. Not bad, not great but acceptable.

Rebuilding doors soon. All the parts finally arrived.

Undercoat the underside!

Brake work done.

New radiator in.

Amazing build!!

Love your set up. Super jelly. I can't wait to start molding mine... I like the functionality of fender flares but can't stand how it looks like it's gonna tip over with them on. Maybe just the offset I'm running too. None the less awesome rig man!

Thanks. It's been a labor of love. Tons more to do. The flares are very practical with the wheels. My spends most of its time on the road so it make sense.

Makes sense. I wish I could find someone around here building theirs too. I would love to help and work on a newer 80. This damn 3fe is a pain in my a $$.

Just do your homework and take it one step at time. Mines not a DD so its there when I can work on it. If it frustrates you badly find the oldest old fart Toyota wrench you can and have him go through it.

Mine is a daily unfortunately but only for the time being. I'm getting there though. Got it in terrible condition. Wondered how it even made it home on its two hour drive hahaha.

Hey whats your tire size if you don't mind me asking?

I'm running 33" AT2's. The PO put them on about 1k before he sold it to me. Ive yet to see how they do off road but the size is right. Since I run around a lot in mine its plenty enough. I know a lot of the guys goe to 35's but for now I'm satisfied. Expedition Overland uses AT2's on all their trucks and are very happy with them.

Dual battery effort underway....
Looking great! I am a big fan of my GG AT2s. I run them on my '92 and my pickup. They're a good 'jack of all trades' type of tire for a mixed use truck.

I have been very happy with them. The PO put them on and they barely had 1k on them after purchase. They do very well though. Besides my biggest noise is the 3FE and behind that the Magnaflow muffler.

So, I made a cardboard template and fabbed myself a nice little shelf to sit behind the battery tray. This is where it sits now. I have been pre-occupied with a major LC-type purchase which has derailed my plan. More coming....

Ive been wanting to update this thread for a while because a lot has happened. In April 2017 I acquired “The Trail Whale” from Mr. Moose. My long term plan was to eventually add lockers and rebuild the tired 3fe... Well this truck had lockers, 5.29’s, a 4” Ironman lift and fairly recently refurbished engine. So, it made sense to buy the truck and merge the two. Got a trip into Badlands in to see what the Whale could do. As of now the engine is being installed. The plan next year will be a rebuild of the transmission and then it’ll be where I want it.

These are photos from this summer. The axles have been switched out, the compressor installed (OBA is underway), voltage guages added and rebuilt rear shaft with .095 tubing completed. Engine switch to a newer 3fe to begin after Thanksgiving. The tires are 35” Grabber X3’s which are yet to be tested on the trail. A Slee transfer case skid plate has been added but I’m thinking about going to the full skid plate when the transmission work gets done. The radiator and all of the hoses are new as well. How does she run? Full and cool.

Soooooooo. The swap is underway. I’m capable with vehicles but changing engines is beyond my skill set. My friend Pat who is actually the PO of this truck is undertaking the task because hes damn good at this kind of thing. He noted that part of the torque converter broke off but the truck still rans normally. Kind of a testament to the ability of these trucks. He did a great job on the exhaust parts. When she comes home at the end of January its time to finish the OBA and get the windows rebuilt. Did I mention that in addition to volt meters for each of the batteries I will have a transmission and water temperture guage? By AutoMeter? Oh yea. Thats about as tech as this turd is going to get. Wait till the next post to see what was also found on the removal of the engine.

Just when I thought the two 1992’s were the end of any new additions I found this and couldnt resist:

It has a 4 speed....
It has manual lock outs....
It runs beautifully.

What’s my plan? I dont know yet....

Where did you get the manual?!?! I found out my 3fe was running with 10 leaky valves and two dead injectors that only worked wide open. I was some how able to hit 70 on the freeway. These things are tough.
