Guys,

Two hours ago I added the 4th TLC to my herd. A 1989 FJ-62, 203K miles, Grey, NO RUST. I bought it from the original owner and the vehicle has been in Asheville, garaged, for the last 17 years.

The better half even approved the deal BEFORE I BOUGHT IT. Details of how to convince the better half are available for a small fee.

So, now I need your help. What should I be looking to fix? Are the rear springs supposed to be "flat," what size tire can I put on it without lifting? How do you get bike grease out of the rear carpets?

Congrats Davif. Great year too!

Check out the 60 series section for answers to all of your ?'s.

- Rear springs are usually close to flat by now. But not originally.
- Max tire size is usually 33x9.5x15
- I woudl try carpet cleaner and a brush and see where that gets you with the grease??? Really not sure here.

What are your plans for the 62? Stock like Alex or modified like JP and myself??

Time to change your sig line! :)

OK,
Changed my signature. Plan on keeping it stock like Alex, but with some upgrades like Bilsteins and Toyos.

Our club has turned into a whole bunch of hoarders!!! :D

Congrats David. Sounds like a good truck.

Try simple green on those grease stains with a soft scrub brush.

Hoarders . . . I like the sound of that. I will try Simple Green first thing in the morning when the cleanup begins!

Congrats..you hoarder you

That Resolve cleaner works wonders. I like the looks
of 31x10.5s on stock wagons. The skinny 9.5s in a tall
size can be a little skittie on the highway. With even a small
spring/shackle lift those 33x10.5s look SWEET!
I run the 31x10.5s on our 60 and they work well even at stock
spring height. (new springs, just stock size)
Oh, and this thread is useless without pics :flipoff2:

Ok, pictures would be great. Just spent the last two hours trying to fiqure out how to upload the digital pictures I took today. Arg!

Thanks Jeff!

As Dante wrote: "Without hope we live in desire." The Divine Comedy, Inferno, canto IV, l. 42.

Or as Billy Joel said, "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the Saints." Come Out Virginia, Glass Houses (I think), @ 1980.

It was too good of a deal to pass up: original owner, garaged, no rust, pristine interior, all maintenance records. Best part, I've paid more for a bicycle! Even my wife :princess: (who was opposed to my buying a 4th) insisted that I buy this one.

If multi - Land Cruiser owners are doomed to the "Fourth Ring of Hell" (which, I believe, may be a Tellico Trail), it is going to be a good long (albeit warm) party! I look forward to hanging out with the Capt., Alex, Allan, JP ( :flipoff2:) , Marshall, etc.

Congrats, David! That's a nice looking 62. Great find!

As we've discussed, the more Cruisers the better!! :D

Good to see the fleet continue to grow. ;)

Okay...remind me NOT to play TRivial Pursuit with this feller!

Thanks Jeff!

I am impressied David, I feel like I am back in English 208..........

Okay

I've owned the 62 for a week now and have done the following:

1. Cleaned & Waxed
2. Rotated Tires and Changed Oil
3. Replaced the Thermostat (Using a thread posted by Alex) and changed coolant. Breaking into the thermo housing was fun!
4. Dropped the rusted 6-bolt trailer hitch and cleaned and repainted surface rust on frame. To trash or not to trash old rusted hitch, that is the question!

To Do:

1. Take it to "Sam's Radiator Repair" to weld up some pin holes in the top of the radiator and in the seam between the top and bottom.

(Every time I bring a rig in Sam comments that if he owned it, he would take the plates off, drop the insurance, putmudders on it, and run it ragged. If I die, please make sure Sam does not get any of my cruisers)

2. Decide whether to replace the springs with SOR's 1 1/2 -2 inch "soft" lift springs.

3. Figure out what made the outside edges of the front tires wear (toe, camber, bearings?)

4. Replace Tires. Definitely TOYOS (love 'em). Size will depend on whether I replace the springs.

5. Sew in some new gray vinyl to the side of the front seat (have sample in wallet, will go to fabric store). Plan on undoing hog rings, taking bottom cover off, and sewing in new vinyl myself)

6. Put on new brake shoes.

Anybody want some winter Bar-B-Que?
