the holiday season bestowed upon me an exhaust manifold leak. i feared the worse because the lower, rear stud was missing: figured with my usual luck it has stripped out or broken off. having fought this battle before i ordered all new studs, nuts and gaskets.

surprisingly, all the fasteners turned without incident and other than a missing stud and worn-out gasket, everything looked pretty good. nothing stripped or froze and the missing stud apparently just backed out as the threads were great. i got a set of stud sockets a while ago - a great investment and always nice to have an opportunity to use it.

one of those "while I'm in there" jobs. when i got the truck it was obvious the cat had been replace fairly recently..... a good thing. unfortunately, whoever did the job cobbed it together as the fit and finish was horrible and leaked from all the junctions as well as the muffler. i spent a lot of time going back and fourth on getting a header and bigger exhaust but since I'm staying in a rental i don't have all the tools to mock up a full exhaust or the time to fight with the fit. rock auto had some good prices so i took a chance and stayed 'stock'. the primary tube was a pretty good fit - had to tweak it a little on the back end. the muffler section was fairly close too - had to tweak the hangers to get it right and shorten it. my project for tomorrow is bolting it all up, welding hangers and fitting up the cat. since the cat was aftermarket i had to shorten it.

Why no upgrade to 2.5" exhaust? Was to best improvement I ever did to my '80 20R.

i couldn't find anything reasonably priced and working out of a driveway with very minimal equipment, didn't want to try and put one together myself.

the fit was pretty good for "bolt on".. had to do a little massaging but nothing major. not sure how the original runs but i tried to keep it as tight as possible to the frame. the old one seemed to hang down very low.

Cat is up-side-down. Port goes on top for thing that use it.

wasn't sure about the cat: i looked at a bunch of cars around and they all had the heat shield facing down and the truck has a shield built in the top so figured that's the way it would go.... let me put the exhaust a little higher too... easy enough to flip if it becomes an issue

It's not. Don't worry about it. The cat doesn't care how it's mounted.

Thanks. Got everything through rock auto. Like I said , it fit pretty good overall. I did have to weld the hangers on after the cat. I priced it out a bunch of different ways but when all was aid and done, this was the most reasonable way to go

Sorry for the late post lol, but i see the pics and everything looks great. I was wondering if you had a part number for the manifold, i only see the ATP and Dorman and was wondering which one you. Thanks in advance for your time and great post, im heading to dealer tomorrow to order the studs and nuts since they are only like 1$ each which is cheap for OEM(ish) lol

my manifold was ok: didn't see any cracks etc. i just cleaned it cup and painted it with some high temp paint. there was the slightest bit of pitting on the manifold flange so i spread just a whisper (pretty much wiped all of it off leaving just a sheen to fill any pits) of copper permatex on it.

a quick update: heard an exhaust leak coming from the engine area - probably the collector gasket, I was thinking. Everything looked ok and nothing was loose. As usual, it only got worse. It finely got to the point where it was very annoying and I had the time to really look it over. cracked almost all the way around where the metal was stretched. I was very careful when i was originally fitting it up to make sure it wasn't being forced out of position... maybe wasn't perfect?

in hindsight, should have just kept the original toyota piece - it was still in pretty good condition. i was thinking my welds were pretty ugly until i complared them to the manufacturer's
