At the dealer (Toyota of Redlands) yesterday for a transmission service and coolant flush. I have 60,000 miles on the beast. I mentioned to the service writer that I was early on the coolant flush and he said that per the new recommendations, I was 10,000 over. He showed me a document from Toyota with the new recommendation stating for long service interval coolant, it be changed at 50,000 miles or 60 months rather than the older recommendation of 100,000 miles or 120 months. I asked him why and he said he didn't know. He said that this came out about four months ago. Interesting...

can he provide you with the copy?

I’d like to know if that was from Toyota for SLLC, or just a local Toyota dealer recommendation for extra profit service.

I’m with @ryanCA and @Sandroad in wanting to see a copy of whatever document your service advisor was using as proof for this rec. 50k is what I did just because it was my choice, but if it’s officially from Toyota it should be in some sort of release.

The original recommendation:
"Initial replacement at 100,000 miles/120 months. Replace every 50,000 miles/60 months thereafter. Refer to “Engine Coolant” in the “Explanation of Maintenance Items” section in the back of this guide for more information."

The document, which I just skimmed, did not specify if this was for the initial change or not, or at least I did not see if that was the case. What I took from the service writer was now all changes are 50,000 miles/60 months. Since I have always planned to do the 50,000 mi/60 mo interval anyway, I really don't care. I just have reservations about the same coolant being used for 100,000 miles or ten years, whichever comes first. Essentially, this would add only one additional coolant change over the life of the vehicle. Upon reflection, it's really not worth a discussion. Sorry. I just thought others might find it interesting.

Au contraire, mon Ami….definitely worth discussion. If Toyota is quietly changing coolant flush intervals, they are likely doing so for a reason. These flushes add to the “overall cost of ownership” so it looks like the engineers are at least taking some ground back from the accountants with respect to maintenance intervals. If they made the change, I’d bet it’s due to the HG issues we have been o-so happy to discuss recently.

Rare? Yes - due to too infrequent of x fluid changes? I don’t know.

I think the new and updated coolant flush interval is related to gaskets leaks caused by acidity build up over time. Re: Car Care Nut video.

See for yourself how many people got results in the acid end of the pH range (hint: the data doesn’t support the assertion)

Also interested what your dealer's source material is.

I just did the first documented coolant flush on my 2011 Tundra daily (3UR using Toyota SLLC) at 14 years and 135k, and the coolant test strip was well within acceptable range for acidity. While that's not much data I think the CCN video is causing some unnecessary panic in the OCD Land Cruiser community.
