can someone help me out. where is the most cost-effective place to buy new seals. i need new rubber seals for around doors where i am going to take chrome seals off as well as cargo window exterior seals and windshield seal. i took the chrome out of the rears and windshield and dont like the ridge it leaves. i also need to get the seals that go around vents and headlights/grills.

any thoughts would be appreciated

do a search for some of Kevin Rowland's posts on this subject. He has a long thread about dechroming. The short story is that you can remove the chrome from the seal itself and then replace the chrome with a rubber gasket material available at "some" auto window shops. I haven't done it myself yet so I can't say more than that. Read the threads and all the info you need is there.

Good luck.

I know of that too. Havent done it but it was recommended to me as well. you just buy a small rubber strip that replaces the plastic piece under the chrome trim.

I wouldn't call you a loud mouthed snook - I'd call you thorough.

That sounds like an awesome project with great results and you are right on the rubber being old....

That said, there is a cheap option, I finally found the post:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-...ervice-announcement;-de-chroming-windows.html

That will give you all the info you want on cost effectively de-chroming your windows while preserving the original weather stripping (for better or worse)

As an aside, the chrome window ledges...are not functional, and can be ditched. You can separate the rubber portion of this part from the chrome strip. The rubber window seals attach to the door itself via plastic or metal tabs, 6 or 8 of them per window, which will most likely break when you remove these strips. New ones are like $1.14 a piece, and they do add up but are cheap enough I guess. Also the seal itself has a metal insert inside it, which will snap and prevent it from being nice for reuse, new ones are like $15-20 a piece. I reused mine and they're OK.

Some 60s didn't get the chrome ledge, so this will not apply to those trucks.

hey all...thx for the input. i checked out the dechroming thread, but still confused on two things.

first is that two sizes of seal are mentioned....but also says that the 848 part number will work for both...can anyone clarify that?

second is about the chrome on roll up windows........does bottom piece need to be re-installed for seal or can just remove chrome and be done with it.....both are mentioned

thx again

Read my post #6 for the second question. As for the first question, I was unable to get the strip into my back window.

I will have to try again now that I have some PB Blaster dry teflon spray. I'll be taking the window out when I spray the truck.

found the window lock to replace chrome seals....but had to buy 100 foot roll.....will have 50 foot or more left if anyone intested.....25 bucks plus ship

Just finished the same last weekend (thanks to Chad with sending me his excess strip lock)...

Piece of cake and looks soooo much better... I didn't even find the rear window/windshield to be too much trouble. If I held my screwdriver at just the right angle it would push the new lock right into place as I moved around the bead.

I'll post pics when I can grab them.

hey koby and chad, do either of you notice a reduction in wind noise from removing the chrome trim that goes up the a-pillar and around the exterior of the car? i have lots of wind noise emanating from the driver's door area, and my chrome strip always wants to come undone. i wonder if there's a connection. is it worth removing just for that reason?

Has anyone been able to order this gasket online ?
