I have a 18ft car hauler. It's a tandem axle with a steel bed. I need to mount a winch to it and would like to see what options/ideas are out there as well as any good winches for this. I read somewhere that setting it up with a snatch block with 2 lines and a pulley was a pretty good idea as well as safer. I would prefer something that could be removed, (ie bolt it on), but willing to consider a welding option.

And no, the HF 2000lb electric winch wont cut it, I currently have one which is causing me to do this upgrade!! It just cant pull in a 80, much less a 40.

add a reciever hitch mount and get of the hitch cradles from HF.

^^^ x2... This would be the easiest way to install and remove it once it was actually setup.

Sent from deep in the mountains of Honduras using only sticks and rocks.

I have a 5000 lb Warn winch that I have just for the car hauler. Since the winch is only used with the car hauler I just leave it on the car hauler all the time. My car hauler has a 2"X2" sqaure tubing running across the front. The winch is on top of the tubing. Have a piece of tubing running in front and one behind the rail. Then two small pieces of angle running front to back underneath on each side. Using the holes in the bottom plate of the winch as a pattern I drill thru the loose tubing and angle iron underneath and bolted it together. I sandwiches the car hauler's front railing. No holes in the car hauler and it doesn't rattle around like it would in a receiver hitch. Can get pictures this weekend if you want.

yes, some pics would be great. I am not a fabricator, but have neighbors/friends that are.

This was a very simple setup. No real fabrication involved. Couple pieces of scrap metal, drilled a few holes and bolt together. Beside the rattle of a receicer hitch it makes it tougher for some one to just walk off with it. It I didn't the car hauler in a secured location I would weld the nuts to the bolts making it even harder to steal. The winch was given to me. Just needed to pick up the remote control. 5,000 is really to light to use even on a FJ40 so figure the car hauler was the best place for it. Beats using a come-along to load a inop vehicle. Even unloading is more controlled. I'll be picking up a non running FJ25 this weekend. so I get some pictures then. Right now it's all covered up to protect it from the AZ sun.

Get a small truck box and mount the battery and winch inside it. That way you can lock it up.

I use a 2" receiver as well so I can move it between trailers and my tractor. An added bonus is you don't have to worry about someone stealing it when it is on your trailer.

I have seen one setup as mentioned above in a toolbox and that would be a nice option if you never had to share the winch between trailers.

Here is how I mounted mine. I thought about the receiver hitch but only use I have for it since it's only 5,000 lbs is the car hauler. I have other winches for vehicles. I just used a couple pf pieces of heavy gauge wire I had then a set of jumper cables to the towing vehicle battery. For me it wouldn't make sense to have a dedicated battery. The only thing I paid for was the controller for the winch.
