Ok, so I was driving my '82 FJ40 to work a couple of weeks ago, and the A/C Idler Pulley - - which had apparently decided it didn't want to go to work - - seized. It flew off, and into the Fan, then into the radiator. I determined that the damage was not immediately terminal and proceeded to work. I ordered a new fan from CCOT (@$35) and a new 4 core radiator from radiator barn.

So, while waiting for the Men In Brown to arrive, I took the old radiator and fan out and de-rusti-fi-cated the surrounding area.

The fan and the radiator came yesterday and I was able to put the whole thing back together. (This is a big deal as I have not yet graduated to grease monkey).

The only thing left is to replace the A/C Idler Pulley and Fan belt. I retrieved the Pulley from a hayfield where it was causing a small wildfire, but was unable (unwilling) to go into the road to get the belt. Before posting, I have checked with RH Toyota for a new Pulley and they are stumped since my AC is a York aftermarket.

So, with that short story (ha!) here are my questions:

(1) where can I get an Idler Pulley that will work (does it HAVE to be the same diameter?)

(2) how do I size the road kill fan belt that I lost (It goes around the Alternator , AC Compressor, Idler Puller, and Drive Shaft Pulley)

I have attached pics, because as JP says "this post is useless without pics."

Pic 1: The Evil Idler, the remains of the race, the Idler bolt (17mm axle), and the spacer.

Pic 2: The Idler Pulley bracket

Pic 3: My handiwork with the radiator and fan.

Thanks!

I being the collector of all 40 A/C parts may have something that will work. But I will not know until I get home next week.

THis A/C I bought came with these brackets. The idler pulley just might work.

Thanks guys!

That's a great idea about the string. D'oh! And Marshall, that Pulley in your pic is exactly what I need if you can spare it. Better yet, if you know where I could get one of those suckers new, that would be even better. I have all those same brackets in my York aftermarket A/C setup.

I would think some where like Napa would be able to supply you with the york pulley you need....... but I don't know I have never had to deal with such luxurious options as A/C :grinpimp:

good luck with the fix David.

JP I thought of you as i drove my 40 without the alternator hooked up!:grinpimp:
