I'm re-repairing a botched bit of bodywork on the rear quarter panel of my 62. Almost all the paint on the truck is original, with a nice rock chip patina on leading edges. A thorough compounding brought out the original red beautifully, and it's now a 10-foot looker, as it should be. No more resto planned.
The only place the paint is not original is in this previously repaired area, which was poorly 2-staged with some crappy clearcoat that is now crazed and flaking. Since I had to chisel away 1/4" of Bondo under the repair, I'm going to respray that whole area.
Question is what to use. I'm more comfortable with single-stage, and I'm not after a concours finish. After removing oxidation from the undamaged panels, the photo spectrometer says it's a 7/10 match to the factory shade. Not bad for 24 years, so I just need a reliable color match to Toyota 3F4 and a good, durable paint I can blend in. I live in Seattle, so sun/heat wear is not an issue. I have HVLP spraying equipment and experience using it with PPG finishes. Only reason not to go with their products is the price I was quoted: $175 for a urethane pint kit.
Any recommendations?
