Need help with right mirror

Thanks to this thread I just did both of my mirrors, which were horribly loose and bouncing around.

Drivers side went easy, but broke a clip installing the cover. Passenger side wasn't so good... two of the star screws heads were already stripped. Installed one new screw and put the cover back on. Didn't feel like fooling with it much more than that in the snow/ice.

Awesome thread! Will be doing this to my passenger side in the next week or two. That wobble bugs the hell out of me whenever I'm on the highway.

just passenger side wobble. ordered both kits. having a hell of a time getting the screws out. Stopped before i stripped them. They seem seized. crikey. long screw driver awkward, and it forces an angled approach so the torx (sp?) head isn't seated. Will have to look into the ratchet thing someone mentioned. Really don't want to take the mirror off. I've pulled apart my 04 on many occasions. not ready to start popping panels on my 08.

It looks like those part numbers may have changed. I tried ordering some of the kits based on those numbers and a few days later the order was cancelled because the parts were "discontinued." This diagram: MIRROR. Toyota | Toyota - https://parts.toyota.com/a/Toyota__/63266741__6725551/MIRROR/791460-8701.html - shows them as 87939 and 87948 now, although that isn't especially clear either. Found some marked as 87939-60F70 and 87948-60F70. Hopefully these work, as I'm going to order them now. I'll check back in if they come.

Hate to hear that. I ordered those part numbers after Thanksgiving and had no issue getting them. Also, the fix worked perfect and took maybe 3 minutes per side.

Got them and installed them today - while the website showed them with different numbers, the actual bags they came in reflected what techster82 said.

I handled this project today. The hardest part for sure was figuring out how to get the cover off. The prior posts in this thread were helpful, but none of them really explained the exact spot to pry. That YouTube video up above gave me that information, and then I could see it for myself.

Here is what you get in the package (even though the explanation when you buy it just says "Bolt Set."

On the underside of the mirror, there are two tiny drainholes. You are looking for the one that is up against the car. Not the obvious one that is in the middle of the mirror. And if you didn't read this before, tape the area under the mirror or tape a rag on there or something, because you will likely scratch the paint during this process. Look for this hole down to the bottom right in this pic:

@jamesbe's description is great, but if you are like me and don't happen to have dental tools lying around in your tool box, I was able to bend a heavy duty paper clip into a hook to get it done.

Once you get the bottom bit pried off, go back to what @jamesbe said in step 6, because there is a little serpentine maneuver you'll need to do to snake the clips off without breaking them (or scratching the paint if you didn't put tape on). When putting the new covers on, just remember that same pattern and it will wiggle into place.

The screws are super easy to ratchet out and then ratchet back in (just hard to see into that little space), but the cover is the spot where you'll need help.

For those of you that have repaired the mirror wobble, did your mirror fail to open and close when you pushed the button inside?

I’ve got a ‘10 LX where the driver mirror has a slight wobble when driving 95% of the time. Every once in awhile it seems like it locks back in place and doesn’t wobble for a day or so. Same thing with the auto open/close button - doesn’t work 95% of the time but randomly the mirror will open and close with the button inside.

I’m hoping the new screw kit is all I need but I haven’t heard mention of the auto close/open feature not working so I’m wondering if I have a bigger problem.

Both of my mirrors on my 2008 were wobbling quite a bit. It is very annoying once you notice it. I ordered kits for both mirrors and installed the new screws today, which totally fixed the problem.

As others have mentioned, the covers are very difficult to get off. The directions on this thread definitely helped, but they are still not easy. I broke one tab off of each cover when I removed them.

When it came time to put them back on, I practiced with my broken covers. I followed @jamesbe instructions and with some trial and error, I got originals (each with a broken tab) to snap back in. They were still in good shape and seem to be installed well, so I am just going to let them be and keep the replacement covers as spares.

So nice not to have wobbly mirrors!

With the tsb kit are there any changes in the design from the original or is it just 3 of the same exact screws with lockwashers added and new loctite? If that's the case, maybe I'll just pull the cover off and throw lock washers onto the old ones.

It’s been a while since I did mine but I believe they were slightly longer?

All,

I have installed the kits on both sides today, and possibly found a better (or safer) way to put the plastics back.
Instead of learning how to fly them into place doing S-shaped acrobatics, I removed the top of the door inside panel, opened the top two clips of the main panel, removed the three nuts fixing the mirror to the door, and, with the mirror removed and turned upside down, the plastics fell in place almost by themselves.
The only difficulty is the dexterity you need to remove one of the three nuts, as it is difficult to reach with the panel just pried open.
Still a much better proposition than risking to break the plastic tabs by installing the plastics in the way Toyota indicates.

Just thought that someone may decide to use this alternative.

They are, just enough to accommodate the two washers
