I'm thinking about getting my cruiser painted. I have attached picture for reference to how many dimples my LC has. It started with a little hoof rust. I got a price for $1600 to do the following:
1.Cut and patch the roof with fiberglass
2. Pull the dents and use a thin late of bondo where needed.
3. Paint with a single stage paint 2 coats.

My questions are does this sound like a fair price and are the methods acceptable? I have not delt with having a car painted before. My main concern is the price is to low and the work reflects the price at the same time I don't want a truck I'm worried about scratching. Thanks.

I would say from those pics alone you have about 3k in dent repair. I would add another 5k on top of that for a paint job not including what needs to be done on the roof whatever that looks like. Cheap body work can end up costing you more because it won't hold up more than 2 or 3 years. I had a favor a paintless dent guy owed me, so he popped out my dents, but mine wasn't near as bad as yours. Take it to a reputable pointless dent guy and see what they can do first. Here is mine before I started. Also keep in mind that many 80s by this time are developing rust under the window seals, so I removed all of mine and treated the rust. It's a decent project. So I would only take it on if you plan on keeping the truck for a while.

Something to consider when only painting the roof...there is no hard line to stop at. So it can be tricky to blend brand new paint/clear with 20+ year old paint on the rear upper quarters.

If this doesn't bother you, no big deal. But you realistically will be able to see the difference.

Paint is one of those things that you get what you pay for. You can expect 5k-7k for a good complete paint job with all the glass, door handles and other items removed.

That would be a bargain. I've been seeing $12K for a "complete" paint job as you describe.

The Maaco s***ty jobs are $5-7K

Cut and patch the roof with fiberglass??

Whats up with the roof? Got pics?

Find a reputable shop and spend $2k on the roof to get it done correctly. Then just live with the rest of it the way it is if you plan on some off road adventures. $ 1600 for a complete paint job ......it is not going to end well and you will spend a lot more money to fix it right afterwards. I’ve seen it too many times . I wish quality paint and body was less expensive but it’s labor intensive and quality materials are not cheap.

Don't do it. lipstick on a pig is what you will get for $1600.

Get the rust cut out and new sheet metal welded in, that should be the 1st priority. If you don't want to go all in a full proper paint job, you should spend the money just on the roof.

Yeah i would agree with just get the roof fix first or spend the money to do it right. Spend 1600 on a quick fix and single stage paint is not going be good or look good. And in a couple years, you going to end up to spend more money to re-do anyway. So spend your money wisely.

Any one know of a reputable shop to do this work in San Diego?
No, but if you send your rig up the coast to Oxnard, you can have it painted by Mario's Auto Body where I have mine at right now for a full repaint, new front window & seal, new fender flair gaskets, new window trim. I am doing an FJ55/60 2-tone paint scheme. Mario has painted 3 cars/trucks for me now and painted my friend's Tundra twice (2 time was after a Prius T-boned him.)

Cali shops who are quoting you $1500 are too cheap to do good prep work, and anyone charging more than $5000 is too high unless their normal clientele includes Ferraris, Porsches and other luxury cars where owners freak out if they find the slightest shade difference or a hint of orange peel. The sweet spot for a good daily driver/cruiser paint job is around $4-$5K, including the rust patch job you need.

if you're trying to do it on a budget and can wait until the border reopens, might be worth asking around for shop recommendations in TJ
