I need help with the engine variations that were available for the 2005 model year for LX470. Unfortunately, my engine is now shot, and I have to replace it. Not sure yet if my current engine is able to be rebuilt. The mechanic is looking into that option as well. The reason I am asking this questions is due to conflicting information both online, from the engine companies, and even from Lexus directly, and so far no one has been able to answer the question about the right engine other than I don't need 853A (as that was used for VVTi models).

My car was built in 11/04, and according to Lexus, the engine is no longer available even if I wanted to get it from them (which I don't), is part 190050B50, which doesn't tell me whether this was considered the 853 or 853B variant. According to the Lexus part guy, he seems pretty sure that it is the 853, however according to the screenshot he sent, the engine that was put in my car was used from 1/04 to 4/05. But when you look up the 853 engine it shows 98 - 4/05, and the 853A was from 5/05 - forward. There is no mention of a breakdown that went from 98 - 12/04, and then the next engine from 1/04 - 4/05. I don't seem to have an issue locating the 853, or the 853A, however the engine known as 853B is no longer made or available anywhere that I have checked, which if that is true, poses a HUGE problem if I need a replacement.

Second question, has anyone who has an 2005 LEXUS LX 470 mfg 11/04 ever used the 853 engine in lieu of, and what differences did you encounter? Were you able to work around the differences, and if so, how?

Lastly, is there a way to definitively find out which engine variant based on the codes located on the engine itself since the VIN# only points me to a part code not whether it is an 853 or 853B.

Thanks in advance for your help!!!!!

I bet the engine itself is the same, its probably minor differences in the accessories or something. I dont think the VVTI engine was found until the 2006 & 2007 model year. I would source a good used engine from ebay, and not worry too much about the nuances. Swap all your accessories over to the new engine, just keep the long block and head from the replacement engine.

@GloWormNC What exactly happened to your LX? Try looking up on Car-part.com for an engine in your area, I found one out of a 2002 Seqouia near me with 185k verified miles I ran the VIN and it was close.

98-05 all have same basic short block and heads. Which these are still available new. What is not available is a crate engine (complete drop in engine).
A local Toyota parts manager recently said. Their shop is estimate $15,000 installed (new block & heads) all in.

Difference in 98-05 is mostly throttle body, which you'll use your intake manifold and throttle body. The alternator increased in AMP in 03 (IIRC), and went to a 3 point mount form 2. Which is just replace a bolt with a stud.

So you can use engine's from 98-05. But a 03-05, is a drop in with the least labor (less parts swapping).

If you go with other than 100 series used engine. Like GX, 4runner, Tundra, Sequia, etc 4.7L non VVTi. They are more labor, as oil pans need swapping out.
I would not use a VVT block or heads in 98-05. But these links may help you, understand what, looking for engine entials. Basic don't just take any engine, do your homework as if buy a used vehicle. BK2 head, has a VIN plate. Run the VIN# and avoid engine without a VIN# (plate removed).

BTW: If your non VVTi engine said to be blown, due to timing belt break. Likely it's just needs a new timing belt.

The killer of the the 4.7L 2UZ-fe, is overheating warping heads. In these, cylinders are often damaged from coolant also. It the cylinder(s) condition, that is deciding factory.
