1994 HDJ81 Diesel RHD.

The shudder I thought was coming from my transmission was not. It turns out that the u-joint between the transfer case and front drive shaft was failing. It finally let go and took out a sensor on the right side of the transmission. It also crushed 2 lines that run along the right side that look like they might be A/C lines although I don't see why there would be A/C lines there. The sensor got hit and is still there but is leaking tranny fluid out of the joint.

The truck is at the shop right now but I'll try to get a picture tomorrow.

I'm on the hunt for what that sensor might be (heat?) and what those 2 lines are. I'm also on the hunt for part numbers for a new yoke for the drive shaft and one for the transfer case.

Should this be posted in the Diesel thread? I'm not sure if the tranny is any different between the diesel and gas or RHD model.

Anybody help?

Also, If I lock the center diff can I drive it as a rear wheel drive with the front shaft missing?

The AC lines are likely for the center console fridge, that's the easy one.

Are you sure this sensor was on the tranny and not the transfer case? I'd pretty well need pics to help with that, as I don't have an HDJ81 to look at right now.

The tranny should be the same as an FJZ80, but the torque converter will be different.

Oh yes, It's definitely on the tranny. It's pissing tranny fluid when you start it up. I just did some surfing looking for a pic of the tranny showing the part but I came up empty.

What about locking the diff to drive it as a 2 wheel drive while I wait for the driveshaft to be rebuilt? Any potential issues?

if yours is AWD .. center diff lock and with one of your DS removed you are ready to roll ..

The only sensor came to my mind on the pass side ( for my LHD ) of A442F tranny it's the tranny temp sensor .. ( idiot AT temp dash cluster light )

Yep, as Tapage said the sensor is likely the transmission temp sensor. Is it right at the elbow where the tranny cooler lines come out of the side of the transmission? Did those lines and elbows survive?

Lock the CLD and you're good to drive with just the rear shaft.

Have you contacted Sheldon at G&S Cruiser Parts? I know they have a few front complete drive shafts that will bolt right in, and at a reasonable cost.

Were the AC lines above attached to the floor? If so those are the console fridge lines. Also likely available from Sheldon.

Good Luck (and feel free to contact me directly if you have any other questions cruisinoffroad (at) shaw (dot) ca )

Cooler lines are OK. The lines that got crushed were bolted to the floorpan. I won't worry about those till the spring.

Thanks for the head's up about GS. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Thanks,

Kelvin
