Hi All,

It's always just a matter of time. I'm hoping someone can help me ID this leak location. Its just to the right of the alternator, kind of looks like its behind the water pump. Everything above the pointer location is dry. Is this an oil pump seal or something else going on? If anyone can identify this please let me know how many bananas to fix. I'm decent with ancillary systems but don't usually go too far into the engine.

Thanks much!
Sam

I'm not sure what engine you have, but I'd think the alternator would be on the driver's side and not the passenger side. I agree with @Fj80oregon; the oil cooler was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the photo.

I didn't read the post he linked to, but the remedy is in the service manaul. It's in the Resources forum if you need a copy. Not a hard job, but not a quick one either.

Yea.. that isn't the alternator to the left in the photo, my fault.

After I watched the video in the link above it seems like the oil pump leak would be more prevalent on the driver side. This is def on the passenger side behind the water pump. The previous owner had the oil pump gasket replaced. I'd be surprised if that is it but maybe??

No, the oil pump is on the lower left corner of the engine (the driver's side). The oil cooler is under the exhaust manifold, which is what makes the job a PITA.

Yea that makes sense. Not great but probably better than the oil pump cover.
Found this for the oil cooler leak.

Appreciate the feedback here!

Sorry I thought that was drivers side. I would bet timing cover. Best bet is to clean the area really good and watch where it comes from.

If your oil cooler was leaking oil it would be mixing in your coolant. If the cooler leaks it’s usually coolant.

@sambrian2007: What year/model 80 series are your working on?

Can you post up another photo taken from a bit further back?

Either way you could clean that area off very well then take another photo when the the leak reappears,
might show up from just idling a few minutes or after a short drive.
