I have a 1979 FJ40 with all of its smog equipment in tact. But... it doesn't seem to want to remain idling unless the choke is out. I think this might possibly be why but can't find what it maybe. Anyone know what this valve is?

I could be mistaken - but that (to me) doesn't look oem. Is there not a part number anywhere on it? Since you have to pull the choke to idle, that is a classic vacuum leak. Why are you assuming this is the culprit? When you bypass this valve, does it idle fine?
You know, I'm not sure... I did just find the vsv valve wasn't plugged in. 😅

Welp that wasn't it... must be a greater issue all together. 🤔

Check all your filters - maybe Micky built a nest in the intake, water soaked the paper in the fuel filter and gas doesn't pass easy enough. Make sure valve and ignition timing are correct.

Use a can of WD40 with the P tube to quickly but lightly spray along all the gaskets like around the base of the carb and the intake manifold while its running - if the rpms kick up that the spot where the vacuum leak is.

Italian tune up - take it out on the freeway and open her up for a while. Then fill up with fresh gas, now you can start looking for issues.
