Me and my dad are making a fj55 into a off road vehicle we want to be able to mud and go to moab and hit the rocks and dunes. i figured this was the place to find out what i should get on my pig to beef it up

1973 FJ55

Stock rear end, 4:ll gears

Rear end disc brake conversion (Streetrod Manufacturing)

1979 FJ55 disc brake front end

Stock locking hubs

Older Saginaw power steering

Chevy 350 conversion (motor is about 79, likely needs another rebuild soon)

700 R4 overdrive transmission (advance adapter kit)

Stock 3 spd transfer case

31x10.5x15 Michelin ltx

40 gallon fuel tank

Mazda 626 bucket seats

Good daily driver, looking to turn into a mild mudder/crawler

No need for multiple threads asking the same ambiguous question....

Run your truck for a while. Figure out how it works, what needs maintenance/attention and go forward from there.

yea sorry about the multiple thread thing i didnt relize i did it i was in a hurry sorry. but we have had the vehicle for a while now it runs great we are going to have to get a better power steering and reverse shackles. we are thinking of just adding a leaf for the extra 2 inches and then putting like 34-37 inch tires does anybody have any other ways that would preform better. i am just looking for something that will go through mud well and do some rock climbing not like lions back or things like that

Add a leaf is not going to lift the truck enough to clear 34 to 37 inch tall tires.

Do you have a suspension lift in your truck currently?

Do you have any pictures of this 55?

Lions back is not rock crawling. If it were still open, I could drive a car up it.

:meh:

well yea but i just ment like that is intence s*** because if i mess up its quite a problem for my life span. haha. but the guy i buy tires from said that we could probably fit up to 37s on but we were planing on getting a lift we just cant find any. and yea i will take somepictures tomorrow. and we are also wondering how we can get good articulation on the axles

ok thank you both. and i will try to get picture on soon. and what should i spend money on for horsepower and what is a waste. what will work more in mud

I may not know much about beefing up a Pig...but I know even less about 'Mud.
I would imagine that any V8 will give you more than enough horsepower.
The best two mods I did were the spring over and the doubler.
A very wise 'Cruiserhead once wrote "Put your money in gears" so I did and it makes all the difference...in the rocks. and you can fit 35s, maybe even 37s with the SOA.

alright well i am taking it out tomorrow to see how it does

Nice Pig!!

Run it til it breaks then search on mud to find what works best, IF you cant seam to find the answer then post up
pigs are pretty tough
looks like not much rust

Would love to see more pics of this pig, interior specifically. It looks great.
