I just bought my first FJ40 last week and am in the process of some basic tune up stuff. I went to replace the air filter and discovered it is a K&N Filter, but it is sold old that parts of the fabric in the mesh are broken down enough where you can see through it; it needs replacing. I checked the K&N Website and it pulls up an E-2940 which looks like the right filter; I ordered it and when I tried to put it on, discovered that it is too big. The current K&N filter on the FJ right now is oval with a length of 10.5 inches, width of 6 inches and height of 2 inches (all external dimensions). I checked the K&N website with these these dimensions and it comes back with no matches, which I find funny because I am holding the filter; maybe they do not make that one anymore. Looking at competitor websites like Fram and Wix, there is no option to search by dimentions, and the filter that pulls up by vehicle is the same size as the K&N that I ordered that did not fit.
Any ideas on how I can find a filter that fits???

Post up a picture of what you currently have for an air filter and the air filter housing....

OEM from your local Toyota dealer

I would, if I knew it would work. Any brand would be fine in fact. Looking at the Wix number you have suggested there I am not sure if it would work. The mesurments (below) lead me to believe that this thing is an oval filter that is also a cone? If the outer diameter is different from top to bottom, does that mean it is shaped like a cone? If so, I am still stuck at square one. The picture on the Wix site looks like it is just a un-tapered oval filter; those specs have me leery though. Am I reading this incorrectly?

Height:2.561
Outer Diameter Top:14.700
Outer Diameter Bottom:10.200
Inner Diameter Top:10.550
Inner Diameter Bottom:6.050

The air intake is a Downey, and the maximum size filter that can fit inside would be 10.5"x6"x2" or even 2.5"; it would also need to be the same mesurements on the top and bottom of the filter.

So the K&N filter does not have any numbers on it anywhere?

Shoot Downey a PM.

I am sure Jim will help you out, and hopefully he will post up the K&N part number for that filter, because I cannot imagine that you will be the last person in this position.

No numbers anywhere on the thing; called K&N this morning and the closest thing they have is an MG-0100, which is a .2" too wide, not as long by 3/8" and 1/4" taller, which would need new bolts to work with that height even if I could squish it in.

Send Downey a PM

Shansen, that filter element is K&N #E-1050. It is 9" round by 2" tall. It is supplied round, then you push in the two sides to make it oval. The Downey housing then holds it into the oval shape. I don't believe I have any in storage so you will probably have to deal with K&N or one of their distributors.

ahhh! I have been looking for a proper fitting filter element for the Downy air cleaner for a while but in oval. Thanks!

Regarding this same air cleaner housing,
I need to make/purchase a breather connection and get related hose just as pictured in Shansen's pics.

Any info/ suggestions?

I've beat myself to hell trying to find this dang air filter, but it's round...that's funny, thank god for IH8MUD!!
